Superior gears up for Homecoming festivities

| September 13, 2019 1:55 PM

A group of Superior High School alumni are working together to put the “spirit” back in homecoming. In an effort to celebrate the students and alumni, the committee is working with the school to help with events that involve the students, alumni and the community.

Superintendent Scot Kinney and his administration are very supportive of this effort and welcome alumni participation in this year’s homecoming activities to be held the week of September 20.

Homecoming’s special guests this year will be the SHS class of 1959 who will be in town celebrating their 60th reunion. They intend to have a float in the parade and will be at the game cheering on their old alma mater along with all the other alumni, students and staff.

After meeting with Athletic Director, Byron Quinlan, old classmates Mary Jo (Hollenback) Lommen and Diane Magone formed a working committee with Cheryl (Thompson) Crabb and Toots (Frey) Bricker to start organizing events for the weekend. And, since the school no longer has cheerleaders, a call was put out to request those who have cheered before to come to these events, dressed in school colors, and to be ready to lead the crowd in some of the old cheers. Additionally, pep band alumni have been invited to play their instruments in the parade. And, of course, each high school class will build floats and royalty will be featured along with the school pep band and students marching and performing. Local businesses are also invited to participate to show their support of the Mountain Cats.

Some of the other events planned for the week include a pep rally bonfire for all students, school personnel, community members, and alumni to be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the high school immediately following the girls’ Mountain Cats’ volleyball games (with St. Regis starting at 5:30 p.m.).

Activities on Friday begin with the parade at 4 p.m. followed by a tailgate party sponsored by the school at the football field. The homecoming game starts at 7 p.m. and features the Twin Bridges Falcons playing our own Clark Fork Mountain Cats. Halftime entertainment will include the crowning of this year’s queen and king and the recognizing of Superior High School alumni.

To round off the weekend events, a family dance will be held at the Mineral County Fairgrounds, sponsored by the Pool in the Park committee on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 7 to 11 p.m. Everyone is invited and any donations will go toward the building of a new pool.

In addition to these events, a group of students and alumni are hoping to spruce up the “S” and change the year to ’20 for this school year’s graduating class. There will also be old uniforms offered for sale (or donation) at the football field prior to the homecoming game.

Please plan on attending all the week-end activities to cheer on our Cats as they fight for another win!
