Lady Tigers rout Victor for first win of season
After dropping a heart-breaking, low-scoring game on the road against Noxon Friday night, the St. Regis Lady Tigers got their first win of the season Saturday at home against the Victor Pirates.
The young Lady Tigers, who have just one senior and one junior on their roster, rode an aggressive defense and a balanced scoring attack on their way to a convincing 44-12 victory over Victor.
St. Regis out-rebounded and out-hustled Victor from the opening tip, running to a 9-1 first quarter lead behind baskets from four different players.
With 5-10 sophomore Sunny Shoupe and the team’s lone senior, 5-8 forward Kylee Thompson controlling the boards, the Lady Tigers added to their lead in the second frame when they outscored the Pirates 13-5 as they pulled away to a 22-6 halftime lead.
Thompson, who scored nine points for the game, buried a long 3-pointer from the quarter during the second frame surge and was a force underneath.
The stingy St. Regis defense kept up the pressure to open the second half and got four points from Thompson, who along with Shoupe ruled the paint most of the night.
By the end of the third quarter, St. Regis held a 31-10 lead and that elusive first win of the year appeared well within their grasp.
This time they made sure the opportunity would not slip away, outscoring Victor 13-2 over the final eight minutes to nail down the win.
Sophomore guard Taylor Hurd hit for five points in the last stanza and Shoupe kept Victor from scoring inside the rest of the way.
Freshman Macy Hill scored a game-high 11 points for St. Regis while Shoupe added 10 to go with Thompson’s nine.
Friday night in Noxon, the Lady Tigers and the Lady Red Devils battled to a 5-5 first quarter tie before Noxon took what appeared to be control of the game by outscoring St. Regis 8-2, giving the Red Devils a 13-7 lead at the half.
But the young Lady Tigers would not go away and outscored Noxon 10-4 in the third quarter to knot the score at 17-apiece heading into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers could not find the range and scored only one point, on a free throw, as Noxon held on for the win.
The Lady Tigers, 1-5 on the year, travel to Plains Thursday evening for a contest with the Trotters, who lost to Thompson Falls over the weekend. St. Regis returns home Friday night for a game against Two Eagle River.
