Curry's 27 lifts Trotters to overtime win at Noxon

A squeaker and a blowout were the story last weekend for the Plains Trotters girls basketball team.

After a blowout home win over Two Eagle River Thursday, they traveled to Noxon and survived a thrilling overtime contest in besting the Red Devils 58-54.

Against Noxon, the Trotters overcame a season high 24-point effort by Red Devil freshmen Avery Burgess as Plains freshman Kimmy Curry broke loose for 27 points of her own.

Plains used its height advantage throughout the contest, including a rugged first quarter that ended with the Trotters leading 16-12. Kylee Altmiller, Plains’ 6-2 senior post, led the rebounding advantage over Noxon, whose tallest player is 5-8.

Noxon battled back in quarter number two to pull within one, 28-27 at the half.

By the end of the third quarter, Noxon held a 38-36 advantage, thanks mostly to Burgess’ relentless scoring.

But Curry, who kept Plains in the game with her own scoring skills, helped the Trotters to a 15-13 fourth quarter advantage that tied the game at 51. Plains managed to control overtime, 7-3, as they held off the scrappy Lady Red Devils for the win.

No other player scored in double figures for Noxon, while two Trotters, Kaylah Standeford tossed in 13 and Altmiller added 10 for Plains.

Plains opened the weekend action Thursday at home against the winless Lady Eagles.

Standeford and Altmiller each scored 19 points to lead the Trotters’ assault against Two Eagle River. Plains led this one from the start, holding a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and a 37-9 lead at the half.

The second half became a nightmare for Two Eagle River as they failed to score in either the third or fourth quarters. Plains, meanwhile added another 26 points to its total in the second half on their way to the lopsided victory.

Plains is now 8-2 for the year, while Two Eagle River has yet to secure a victory.

The Trotters play at home Thursday against Charlo, the travel to Troy for a Saturday evening matchup.
