St. Regis residents had a very special afternoon this last Saturday as Dr. Al Olszewski, Republican candidate for governor, made a campaign stop Saturday.

As a part of the meet and greet, the host, Joan Carroll, chairman of the Mineral County Tea Party, enlisted the help of her nephew and his wife, Brett and Vicki Harvey, from Washington to catch, cook and serve the attendees an old-time crab boil.

The meal was boiled in steam pots and piled on the table in traditional style with crab, shrimp, boiled sausage, potatoes, and corn on the cob as the menu.

According to Denley Loge, House District 14 State Representative, Senator Olszewski addressed the crowd from Mineral and Sanders counties with information about his family and his Montana background.

He then got into some of his concerns for Montana and his plans for Montana. He wants to “make sure we have affordable health care for all, using the free market.”

One other strategy he has is to “take back control of our state agencies, ensuring they follow our laws.”

One other priority of Dr. Al’s is to work with the legislative branch to pass constitutional laws. In dealing with property tax, “since we are the Treasure State, we should give relief for education costs by letting our natural resource royalties pay and we should also get monies from lotteries and gaming to go back to the schools.”

In the question and answer portion he was asked if he supported the Confederated Salish, Kootenai Tribe water compact and the answer was “no, no, no” with an explanation of his reasons.

The visit was both informative and healthy, according to Loge.

Other candidates were in attendance and given a few minutes for a short bio. Those others included Rep. Bob Brown, running for Senate District 7, Sen. Jennifer Fielder, running for PSC, Scott Tuxbury, running for Montana State Auditor, Rep. Denley Loge, running for re-election for House District 14, and Paul Fielder, running for House District 13.
