In a game featuring two young teams who have struggled for wins throughout the season, this one promised to be interesting.

That it was, and more.

The Lady Tigers from St. Regis came to Plains and escaped with their second win of the year, a thrilling 3-2 match victory over the host Trotters Thursday night.

For volleyball fans, this one had it all. Balls bounced off the high ceiling of the Plains gym throughout the five set match that also featured some wildly improbable digs and extended volleys.

St. Regis took the first game 25-17, a set that featured five ties. Plains raced off to a 9-2 lead before St. Regis rallied to tie the score at nine each. From there it was back and forth before the Lady Tigers went ahead 16-15, then held on for the win and a 1-0 match lead.

In game two, St. Regis took an early lead before the host Trotters regrouped and tied the game at 17 apiece. The score stood at 23-22 in favor of St. Regis before the visitors managed to pull out a 25-22 win and a 2-0 match advantage.

Game three was the start of a long comeback for Plains. The Trotters took a slight early lead, then built it to 13-4 on their way to a 25-12 set win, cutting the Lady Tigers’ match lead to 2-1.

The fourth set was tied 6-6 when Plains began to take over, behind some entertaining digs and volleys that allowed them to pull ahead 17-9. They kept St. Regis caged the rest of the way, chalking up a match tying 25-19 win and setting the stage for a wild game five.

The two teams did not disappoint the fans in attendance.

There were four ties in the deciding game, which was awarded to the first team to reach 15 points and be ahead by two or more. With the score tied at 11, St. Regis had just enough left to roll off four straight points for a 15-11 game win and a 3-2 match triumph.

The Lady Tigers’ win avenged an earlier season loss to the Trotters in St. Regis and left them with a 2-12 mark on the year. With both teams having just one senior on the varsity roster, things should be better next year.

The loss dropped Plains to 1-12 for the year.
