Lady Hawks volleyball overpowers Plains
Paced by a powerful front line and dominating serves, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks overpowered Plains last week in high school volleyball action.
The host Lady Hawks seized control of the match early, as senior Jody Detlaff spearheaded a quick 9-3 lead in the first game of the match. With Detlaff and crew control the net, Thompson Falls cruised to a 25-11 win in the opening game.
Things did not get much better for the Plains Trotters the rest of the way, although they opened the second game with a spirited effort that resulted in several long, fan-pleasing volleys early on.
But the continued dominance up front by the Lady Hawks was too much to overcome as Thompson Falls pulled away from a hard-fought 9-5 lead. That advantage quickly grew to 22-10 as the home team won game two 25-12 to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Game three opened with a shred of hope for the Trotters, who grabbed their only lead on the night at 1-0. However, Thompson Falls quickly tied the game at one each on the next serve and were off to the races from that point on.
By the middle point of game three, the Lady Hawks held a 16-8 lead and shut out Plains the rest of the way on their way to a 25-8 win to wrap up the match 3-0.
The win boosted the Lady Hawks to 4-3 on the year, while Plains fell to 1-6, including a home loss Thursday night to Clark Fork.
Next up for Thompson Falls is a pair of road games, including an encounter with Eureka last Saturday and another trip tonight against Arlee. Plains next three games are all on the road, including a match last Saturday against Troy. The Trotters face powerful Charlo tonight, then journey to Arlee for a match Thursday.
