After a one-year hiatus due to the coronavirus, Plains Day is nearly here and ready to go with a day full of fun activities for people of all ages.

Event organizers have planned events beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday through nightfall at 10:30 p.m.

The Plains VFW will kick things off by hosting Mason’s pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m.

Then the parade begins at 11 a.m. It will start from Central Ave. and travel east to Hubbard Street. Those participating should line up from 9-11 a.m. in front of Plains High School. This year’s parade theme is “God Bless America” and the grand marshall is Lloyd Bache.

Gene Johnson will be the master of ceremonies.

At noon or following the parade, an ice cream social will be held at Rocky Mountain Bank and a Plains Paradise Rural Fire District fire truck display will be held across from city hall.

At 1 p.m., Barber & Barber will perform at the VFW and turtle races will be at Rocky Mountain Bank.

At 2 p.m., the VFW will be the site of the cross cut saw competition.

Following the parade, the greenway will be the site of the first Tom Peterson Memorial car show. Car lovers may vote for their favorite automobile at the “The Free Americans booth.” It is the one with four, giant pinwheels on top.

Voting ends at 2:30 p.m. and winners will be announced at 3 p.m.

Also on the greenway, there will be original music with a patriotic country flare by Jaden Decker, Native American music by the talented Chilaili Wachiwi, a dunk tank on the east end and vendors, including food, local artisans, businesses and nonprofit groups.

Following the parade in Fred Young Park, the Plains Bible Chapel has several activities, many for the kids. They include a bouncy house, games, crafts, popcorn, snow cones, hamburgers, brats and more.

From 5:30-10:30 p.m., the Plains Pool Park will host a dance party, sponsored by the Ryan Family and volunteers.

There will be street tacos and other food, as well as dance lessons, limbo contest and the dance party will feature three local DJs with a laser light show Cosmic Glow, Sera Phantom Online and Polly Millz.

Event organizers thanked everyone who worked to put on the event with short notice, including Mayor Dan Rowan, Plains Police Chief Shawn Emmett and officers Harvey and Reyna, Gretchen Billings, the Free Americans Group (Terry Caldwell, Connie Foust, Mary Halling, Ken Matthiesen, Lionel Bates and Amy Dishaw) and Amber Taylor of ‘Two 21 Designs’ for hours of donated time to heat press the volunteers T-shirts.
