Tough week for Hawks softball

| April 27, 2022 12:00 AM

The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks softball team could hope a dose of home cooking would help bring them out of a three-game scoring slump when they took on Sanders County rival Plains this past Monday afternoon.

Last week was, by any measure, a tough week for the Hawks, who were outscored 42-0 in three blowout losses on the road to a trio of Western Conference rivals.

Their week of agony began last Tuesday when they traveled to St. Ignatius to take on the Mission Lady Bulldogs, who defeated the visitors from Thompson Falls 10-0 in a game called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run Mercy Rule.

Mission outhit the Hawks 12-2 in the win, which saw them handle T Falls pitching, which gave up six runs in the second inning to start the slide.

Celia VanHuss and Olivia Fitchett got the only T Falls’ hits during the game.

Things didn’t get any better for the Lady Hawks two days later when they journeyed to Ennis for a game against the Lady Mustangs, who banged out 16 hits while holding T Falls to four hits in a 16-0 shutout.

Ennis broke open a tight game in the top of the third when they pushed nine runs across the plate and followed that up with five more in the top of the fourth. The game was called at the end of five innings.

Liv McCormick was one for two at the plate for Thompson Falls, with her hit being a triple.

Still reeling from the back-to-back shutout losses, T Falls was hoping for a better showing against the talented Florence-Carlton Lady Falcons. But unfortunately the results were the same as the Lady Hawks dropped their third straight game, also a 16-0 shutout to the Falcons.

And in the game versus Florence-Carlton, which was called after three innings because of the 10-run Mercy rule, the T Falls bats were quiet as they collected just two hits.

Meanwhile, F-C banged out 16 hits including a two-for-three performance by Kasidy Yeoman, who had a home run and five RBIs in the win over the Lady Hawks.

Florence jumped to a 6-0 lead at the end of the first inning, then added a pair of runs in the second and erupted for eight more in the bottom of the third to seal the win.

In addition to yesterday’s game with Plains, the T Falls squad will also play another road game versus Lincoln County (Eureka) this Thursday.
