On a special day, Dec. 7, local veterans gathered at the Plains VFW Post to perform a solemn ceremony, retiring the U.S. symbol of freedom.

This day to remember, as said by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “A date that will live in infamy,” was chosen to honor the 2,335 military personnel killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 1941. Those killed on that day included 2,008 Navy, 109 Marines, 218 Army and 68 civilians.

VFW Post members retired 176 U.S. flags, four POW/MIA flags, two Montana flags, two Marine flags, and one each of Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and one Confederate flag, Wednesday evening.
