The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Requests Input for Proposed Timber Sales PUBLIC NOTICE The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), Plains Unit is proposing to harvest timber on the following state-owned parcels: McKay S36 T26N R32W, Twin Jay S12 T25N R27W, Little Big Rock S28 & S30 T25N R26W. McKay is located approximately 5 miles west of Noxon, Montana in the McKay Creek drainage. Twin Jay and Little Big Rock are located approximately 32 mile north of Plains, MT in the Thompson River drainage. S28 T25N R26W is in Flathead County and all other parcels are in Sanders County. The primary objectives of the proposed project are to generate revenue for the Common Schools Trust, improve stand health and vigor by removing dead and dying trees, and reduce fuel loading and related risk of wildfire. McKay would harvest approximately 3.5 MMBF from 640 acres. Twin Jay would harvest approximately 2 MMBF from 240 acres. Little Big Rock would harvest 1.5 MMBF from 280 acres. All projects would use a combination of seed tree and shelterwood prescriptions. The proposed harvest would contribute to the DNRC's sustained yield as mandated by state statue 77-5-222. These sales may require new and/or reconstruction of roads and would include some minor improvements on existing roads. Noxious weed management, pile burning, scarification and tree planting may also occur under the proposed action. The DNRC is in the scoping phase of the project environmental assessment so all volumes, acreages and road distances are preliminary estimates. In preparation for this project, specialists such as wildlife biologists, hydrologists, soil scientists, and archeologists will be consulted. The Montana DNRC invites written comments and suggestions concerning this proposal.
