Superior girls get hard-fought win at St. Regis

| February 2, 2022 12:00 AM

It was a week against the conference’s “big three” and Superior’s girls came out of it 2-1.

The Lady Bobcats began their tough week with a game last Tuesday against Western 14C girls basketball conference leader Charlo and gave the 8-0 Lady Vikings all they could handle before falling 47-42 in Charlo.

The next evening Superior traveled the 14 miles down Interstate 90 for a game with Mineral County rival St. Regis and came away with a hard-fought 54-42 win. Friday night they returned home and beat Hot Springs 61-36 to wrap up their week against 14C rivals and contenders.

Oddly enough, the Lady Bobcats’ most impressive showing may have been in their only loss of the week at Charlo.

Superior squeaked out a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, then maintained that three-point lead at the half by matching the Lady Vikings 16-16 in the second quarter.

Isabella Pereria spearheaded the Lady Bobcats first half effort with a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter and her usual choking defense ability.

The Bobcat defense had their hands full in quarter number two with Charlo’s sensational junior guard, Mila Hawk, who dumped in 12 points to keep the game close.

Hawk, who earned game-high scoring honors with 22 points on the night, also added six points in the final quarter when Charlo’s defense clamped down on the Lady Bobcats and held them to two points while the Lady Vikings scored 12 to overcome the small Superior lead and secure their unblemished conference record at 8-0. Charlo is 14-1 overall for the 2021-22 season.

Cassie Green, Superior’s senior post, scored 14 points to lead the Lady Bobcats, who are now 7-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference. The two teams will be favorites to place high in the District tourney two weeks from now.

Wednesday night the Lady Bobcats got back on track with their win in St. Regis.

The Cats got double figure scoring from three players to help offset the game-high 20 points scored by St. Regis junior Macy Hill.

St. Regis held an 11-9 lead at the end of a back and forth first quarter. But the Lady Bobcats came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring St. Regis 22-10 to erase that small lead and take a 31-21 lead at the half.

Superior would never trail again and added three points to their advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play.

In addition to Green’s 14 points, the Lady Cats got 11 from Lanie Crabb and 11 from Darby Haskins.

Superior wrapped up its grueling week Friday night with a convincing 61-36 win over Hot Springs in Superior.

Four Lady Bobcats scored in double figures in the victory, which helped offset a game-high 21 points from Hot Springs standout senior forward Katelyn Christensen.

Superior led the game from start to finish, grabbing a 16-8 first quarter lead, then expanding that advantage to a 38-12 lead by outscoring the Lady Savage heat 22-4 in the second quarter. Hot Springs mounted a spirited rally in the final quarter but the Superior lead was too much to overcome.

Superior travels to Plains this Friday for a meeting with the Trotters, then returns home Saturday evening for a return match with conference leader Charlo.
