Lady Bobcats tune up for postseason
The Superior High School girls tuned up for this week’s Western 14C basketball tournament with a positive split of their final three regular season games of the year.
On Thursday, the Lady Bobcats routed Lincoln 56-23, then fell on the road to Philipsburg, 55-37.
But they started off their week this past Tuesday with a make-up, conference game against the Noxon Lady Red Devils in Superior.
The Lady Bobcats rode their aggressive, swarming defense and some solid outside shooting in taking down Noxon. They jumped out to a 13-2 first quarter lead, then held Noxon to just a pair of points again in the second quarter as the Cats rolled to a 17-4 lead at the half.
Senior Cassie Green led a balanced Superior attack with a game best 15 points for the Lady Bobcats. Seven Superior players scored during the game.
Superior came out in the second half and once again throttled the Noxon offense while dialing in some shots of their own. They outscored the Lady Red Devils 15-4 in the third period to build a 32-8 lead going into the final quarter of play.
The win boosted their 14C record to 6-2, good for second and a potential first round bye in the District playoffs, which begin this Thursday in Ronan. The Lady Cats also lifted their overall record to 7-5.
Thursday night the Cats made it two wins in a row with their easy win over Lincoln in Superior.
And once again they used their coach Jeff Schultz brand of constant pressure defense to stymie the Lady Pirates at every turn. The Lady Bobcats led 20-9 after the first quarter, then added to it in the second eight minutes of play to take a 38-13 lead into the halftime break.
Comfortably ahead, Superior was able to get reserves some playing time while at the same time maintaining the grinding defense style of play. They held Lincoln to 10 total points in the second half to win going away.
Green once again led all scorers, this time with 22 points. The Lady Cats also got 14 points apiece from Lanie Crabb and Darby Haskins.
Next up for the Superior girls was a road game to Philipsburg Friday night, where their win streak came to an abrupt halt.
The Lady Prospectors, who came in with an 11-4 season record, jumped out early against the Bobcats, building a 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The two teams then traded baskets in the second quarter, leaving Philipsburg with a 27-15 halftime advantage.
And Green once again led the way for Superior with 13 points while Haskins chipped in 12.
Up next for Superior is the Western 14C District tournament in Ronan this weekend. They are likely the number two seed behind runaway regular season champion Charlo. The top two seeds get a bye for the first day of action.
