Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show revs up

When a family event grows in size a little bit every year, isn’t that a good sign people like it? That it’s fun, entertaining and even educational?

For Mineral County, the Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show attracts locals, but entries come from Hamilton to Kalispell, northern Idaho to eastern Washington.

“We set a record last year with 128 cars and are looking to set a new record this year,” shares Mike Curtin who has been a primary piston in making this such a great day. “It will always be called the Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show as that name is now registered with the state, and we are now a 501(c)(3).”

This is to clarify the name because the location changed a few years ago to the courthouse lawn and the Trail West Bank area across the street on River Street.

The Old School Rockers Club and Chamber of Commerce sponsor the event Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony in front of the bank starting at 3 p.m. More on that in a moment.

“People coming to the show will see the best cars, trucks and classic camper combos in the region. Hands down,” said Curtin.

Great raffle items, 50/50 tickets, other nonprofits, local food vendors and food trucks while enjoying the hospitality and atmosphere of Small Town, America.

“And know that you’re helping some of the greatest kids further their education,” he grins.

The OSRCS doles out studentships and showcases the students at the end of the day.

“We changed scholarships up a little. We did 5 last year at $650.00 each and this year looks like 6 at least $500 each from all 3 schools in Mineral County.”

The awards ceremony has grown, too. Curtin explains this year’s agenda.

“We have 27 Trophies. Best of Show is a belt buckle. Our kid’s choice is picked by the kids that visit the show. The mayor and sheriff each pick a winner. Veterans’ choice will be picked by a few veterans in the community, The Founders is picked by the person that started the show and the rest are picked by a committee.”

About the music during the day.

“Johnny T’s Time Machine has done a great job for us over the years, and we are pleased to have him once again,” he said.

50s and 60s is the predominate era you’ll hear, and requests are taken. He’ll be set up in the bank parking lot which makes for a perfect dance floor for those who care to shake a leg.

“Several different organizations are piggy backing onto the car show which is what the car show is all about,” Curtin said. “Helping the community out,” which was a goal of his when he first became involved with it several years ago.

The Farmers Market will hold their opening day, which is a little earlier than usual, but felt they might draw some attention to their location on the lawn in front of the Old Superior School. The Mineral County Food Bank is going to be open that day and be part of the Poker Walk with a mini flea market in their parking area. (You can rent a table for $10 to sell your goods that goes to the remodel-fund for their new location. Rose Duncan (406) 822-2551).

Whipped Up and the 1776 Club will be selling pastries and baked in the morning and invite everyone to visit their craft fair. The Mineral County Library will be selling hotdogs and chips along with a large Book Day Sale that they are organizing right now

The 23rd Annual OSRCS is in three days, but there is still time for vendors, food carts and hot rod registration. $15 per vehicle on Facebook at OSR Car Show, or email oldschoolhouse@blackfoot.net. If you wait until Saturday, there is a $5 bump in registration with goody bags and dash plaques to the first 150 cars.

And as always, every entry becomes eligible to participate in the Poker Walk around town. An added incentive in this spin-around-Superior is when a person buys anything at any of the Poker Walk stops, they receive another card to make their best poker hand as there’s a dandy prize for this winner at the awards ceremony.
