Plains ceremony honors service of veterans
This past Wednesday, students and staff at the Plains School sponsored the program Honoring All Who Served.
School Superintendent Thom Chisholm in his welcoming address gave thanks to the veterans who have served the country. He spoke about gratitude, grace and how grateful the nation is for their service and sacrifice.
Chisholm then introduced the high school band, which played the Star-Spangled Banner. All attendees stood while each of the honored veterans stood at attention with arms raised in the traditional military salute. Following the Star-Spangled Banner the band played each of the Armed Forces Salute songs. The junior high band continued the program with the song America the Beautiful.
Following the band’s performance, three six graders read their essays.
Kiara Brown thanked all veterans for their service. Makayla MacNair was a bit shy and asked Chisholm to read her essay for her. In the essay she thanked veterans for keeping citizens safe. The final essay was by Madison Hill who said, “without veterans we wouldn’t have freedom.” Following the reading of the essays the middle school choirs gave strong performances conducted by Nichole Cockrell. The 5th graders sang, Sacrifices Made. The song, Veterans We Love you, was performed by the 6th grade choir. Choir members from both grades sang the final song, American Song.
The high school choir gave two moving songs titled, We Honor You and Song For the Unsung Hero.
Closing remark by Chisholm included giving the special service award to veteran Greg Davis. At the end of the program, special treats baked by the Family and Consumer Service class, overseen by Teacher Debbie Brown were given to the veterans.
