Veterans present a memorial wreath ceremony at Plains Cemetery
Veterans from local VFW Post 3596 gathered on a brisk cloudy day to honor their military brothers and sisters, during the annual wreath presentation ceremony at the Plains Cemetery.
The timing of the wreath’s placement started precisely at 11 a.m.
Don Kunzer was tasked to place the wreath at the base of the American flag, while Ron Kilbury read the following: “We gather here today at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 2022 to place this wreath in remembrance of those who have served this great nation before us; to honor those who now serve this great nation; and to salute those who stand by them, in times of peace, and in times of war. May none ever be forgotten.”
The significance of the timing can be traced back to World War I. The Armistice was signed to end the war on the eleventh month, the eleventh day, and the eleventh hour.
Veterans from as far back as the Spanish and American war are buried in the Plains Cemetery.
