Kylar Bannout is the Spotlight on the Arts student for January. She is a sixth grade student at Plains Elementary School.

Kylar was nominated by Mrs. Cockrell, her music teacher.

“Over the past four months, I’ve seen Kylar’s passion and excitement for music. I love listening to her play and sing. The work she puts into learning and perfecting her music motivates and challenges her entire class.”

Kylar’s favorite instrument to play is the clarinet. She started practicing the clarinet last year in the fifth-grade band. Unfortunately, there isn’t an elementary band this year, but she has continued to practice in order to prepare for junior high band.

Kylar decided to play the clarinet after learning that her mother played when she was young. One of her favorite songs to play on her clarinet is “Ode to Joy.”

The clarinet isn’t the only instrument Kylar can play. She also likes playing Ukulele and enjoys singing. Kylar hopes to continue practicing the clarinet in junior high and high school. She also would like to learn how to play the piano.

Music helps guide her feelings. She will listen to relaxing music to calm herself or upbeat music to improve her mood.

“It makes me happy!”
