While Kelly Johnston of Superior was punching his elk tag in the first week of the season, his son Tim was in Alaska on a brown bear hunt that almost became a disaster. After the first shot it went into the thickest brush possible. Tim and his guide went in, and it charged. A 12-yard shot from the hip from Tim and another from the guide, this 9.5-foot beast collapsed.
