The first choir, band and percussion ensemble concert of the school year took place Tuesday evening at Plains High School.

Band and music teacher Loren Lauridson, a recent graduate of the University of Montana, is starting his teaching career in the Plains school district where he aims to bring a new spark to musical arts.

The choir started the evening off with a rendition of the songs "Firefly" and "Magpie." Singing soprano were Abigail Wessely and Randie Kilgore, with Maddie Carter, Kaylynn Boes and Kennedy Starika singing alto, accompanied by Sydne Conolly playing the piano.

The next performance was done by the percussion ensemble with band members Sam Feliska, Brenden Vanderwall, Joe Martin and Izzy Bakker playing the song "Warthog."

Following the choir, band members performed the musical numbers "Bolero" and "El Capitan." Playing flute was Layla Harris, Mackenzie Tulloch and Claire Lakko. Clarinet musicians were Peyton Wasson and Cecillia Harris. Saxophone players were Greg Tatum Stanley Decker and Keegan Huffman. On trumpet were Kalem Ercanbrack and Cooper Meredith. On trombone was Alexander Horodyski. On tuba was Logan Steinebach.  Percussion musicians were Samuel Feliksa, Brenden Vanderwall, Ashley Ferlan, Hallie Tompkins, Joe Martin and Izzy Bakker.

Practice for the concert has been ongoing since the start of the school year, Lauridson said.

Bari saxophone player and junior Keegan Huffman said, “It was pretty decent and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Playing the flute for four years, student Claire Lakko commented, “I think we did good.”

Upcoming choir concerts have been scheduled for a Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. and a winter concert scheduled for Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
