Plains shows school spirit with week of fun and games
Homecoming at the Plains School District is a weeklong event starting out with dress-up day.
Monday’s dress of choice was "fiesta," which the senior class won with 50% of the class participating. Tuesday’s theme was "Disney" but was canceled because the Junior class was missing. Wednesday’s choice for dress-up day was a "Barbie" theme, which was won by the Junior class with 55% of the class taking part. Thursday was "era" and won by the Sophomores with 42%. Friday was orange and black day and was won by all the classes. The winner of the dress-up day was a tie with the Seniors and Freshmen.
Wednesday evening, 300 students, friends and family turned the high school parking lot into an evening of celebration. Students gathered to show school spirit and introduce each of this year’s athletes. The evening’s activities included pulled pork sandwiches for the students, served by the Plains School Booster Club members, Jill Rice, Michelle Greer, Marlee Meredith, and Jesse Jermyn. Introductions were made for each sport represented by the Plains School District and their team members.
The Plains City Volunteer Fire Department and Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District were on hand to honor student athletes by parading the teams through town. Volunteer fire engine drivers, Anthony Young, Curt Alexander and Tim Kinsinger donated their time to help make homecoming week successful.
The evening progressed to the burning of a bonfire. Students of Mrs. Cole’s art class spent several days building a figurine in the shape of a football player, that was the center piece of the bonfire.
The evening’s musical entertainment was provided by the junior high and high school bands, led by Music Director Loren Lauridson.
Homecoming activities continued Friday with a parade showing off each class's float. Twelve floats were entered in this year’s homecoming parade. Both local fire departments were also represented.
It had been more than 20 years since the homecoming parade featured a live horse in the lineup. The horses were supplied by the Carr family with Jaelyn Carr riding on Clancy and John Thurston riding on Banjo.
The best float for this year’s parade went to the Sophomore class.
After the completion of the parade, students ventured out to the football field to try their luck at the Horsemen Olympic games. Several games were offered to challenge the kids.
The Juniors took top honors in the Powder Puff games for girls only. Juniors also excelled in boys-only volleyball matches, taking first place. The Junior class members were on fire, also taking top place in the Ultimate Corn-Hole games.
A new game called the Bed Race was won by the Senior team, just edging out the Sophomores class. The Crazy Goggles Obstacle Course had its usual comic routine, with the participants wearing glasses that distorted their vision. Sophomores did their best, with the Seniors class close behind.
The Senior class edged out the Junior in the King and Queen games. The ice T-shirt contest was a contest to see who could flatten out and put on a frozen T-shirt first. Seniors Devin Barnes and Marissa Young took first place.
The final tally for this year’s homecoming week went to the Senior class followed closely behind by the Juniors.
Homecoming King and Queen went to Greg Tatum and Isa (Izzie) Bakker. Candidates were seniors Devon Barns and Marissa Young; juniors, Django Oakcedar, and Isa (Izzie) Bakker; sophomores, Kylan Bostic and Katelyn Subatch; and freshmen Greg Tatum and Aubree Butcher.
Homecoming ended with a home football game with Arlee, who is currently undefeated this year. The game ended with Arlee winning on a rain-soaked field.
