Plains teams snare wins heading into Christmas break

It was the final “tune-up” of the year for the Plains Horsemen and Trotters, and they will go into the Christmas break with a pair of overwhelming victories under their belts.
This past Thursday the homestanding Plains boys took on Class C Alberton and routed the Panthers 64-28. Then it was the Trotters turn to run up a big win, beating the Lady Panthers 53-11.
The boys opened the two-game event with a big first quarter against Alberton, leading the Panthers 12-5 after eight minutes of play. Led by the scoring of seniors Darren Standeford and Zayden Allen, the Horsemen increased their lead to 30-12 at the half.
Alberton regrouped at halftime and outscored Plains 15-13 in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 43-27. Any hope of an Alberton comeback evaporated in the fourth quarter as the Horsemen defense clamped down on the Panther, holding them to one point. At the same time, Plains’ offense tallied 21 points on their way to the 64-28 triumph.
Standeford led all scorers with scorers with 17 points as the Horsemen ran their season record to 3-1. Allen added 14 for Plains, while three players, Jacob Lulack, Coby Anderson and Wyatt Butcher had eight points each.
The loss dropped Alberton to 1-4 on the 2024-25 season.
The Plains Trotters also used a big first quarter to set the stage for their big win, outscoring the Lady Panthers 23-3 in the opening period. Alberton held the Trotters to six points in the second quarter but scored only four points of their own. At the half, Plains was comfortably ahead 29-7.
Plains came out in the third quarter and limited Alberton to two points while adding 15 on offense, giving them a 44-9 lead with one quarter to play.
It didn’t get any better for the Lady Panthers as Plains held them to two points again in the fourth quarter while scoring nine, securing the 53-11 win.
The victory boosted the Trotters to 3-2 on the season, while Alberton is still seeking its first win.
Next up for the Trotters and Horsemen is a pair of home games versus Troy, January 3.
