Bargain hunters peruse Yard Sale stops

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.

And the latest measuring stick of time going by is now history as the 2024 Sander County Yard Sale came to a relatively rain-free conclusion this past weekend.

Approximately 83 yellow Yard Sale signs were stuck in the ground throughout the county, with Thompson Falls having the most Valley Press sponsored event signs posted with 40.

From Heron to Hot Springs, folks from throughout the county displayed their for-sale merchandise in their front yards or their garages and buyers, although seemingly less than last year, flocked to the sales to find that hidden bargain.

“We’ve had several people stop so far,” said Paradise resident Janice Barber, who along with her husband Brett had several solid furniture items for sale, including an oak desk. “We’ve been doing alright”.

Also available at the Barber's sale were a pair of snazzy women's cowgirl boots.

Other yard “salers” said traffic and shoppers at their events were steady from the opening of the sale Friday morning.

And in addition to the more than 80 participants who signed up with the Valley Press, several other yard sellers created their own signs and held “independent” sales.

And the range of merchandise available was a true testament to the adage “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”, with everything from kids bikes to clothing to appliances and housewares were on sale.

The event mostly escaped the rain that moved in Saturday night.

Locals were not the only ones looking for a bargain, as several cars with out-of-state license plates were seen at many of the sales.

“We saw the signs and had to stop,” said Mary Ann Dalby, who along with her travel companion could not resist stopping and taking a look. “We always hit the yard sales in Casper (Wyoming, where they are from).  I think my car has an automatic yard sale stop device in it.”
