Soccer teams face tough matches at Columbia Falls

With just one match this week in their inaugural varsity season, the Thompson Falls-Plains co-op Blue Hawks continued to build on improvements they have seen. 

Next will be that elusive first victory for both the boys’ and girls' soccer teams. 

With their entire schedule being against established high school varsity programs, progress has come in player improvements over the season. 

The boys team lost to Columbia Falls, 9-1, while the girls dropped a 9-2 decision to the same school this past week. 

For the girls, they were once again stronger in the first half than the second, as the Lady Hawks got a pair of first half goals and trailed 5-2 at halftime. 

Sophomore Ava Lawyer scored T Falls-Plains first goal of the day, followed later in the half by a goal from freshman Elisabeth Weederman. 

But in the end, Columbia Falls was too much as they added four goals in the second half while holding the Hawks scoreless. 

The boys met with the same results as the girls, as they got a first half goal from junior Andrew Wrobleski on a penalty kick.  However, it would be their only goal of the match as the strong Columbia Falls team. 

Boys head coach Michael Scharfe remained upbeat about his team’s progress. 

“I am proud of these boys, they played hard the whole game and never gave up,” Scharfe said. “One of our goals for this game was to score on them and that came to fruition when Wrobleski scored”. 

The teams played at Plains against Browning on Tuesday.
