St. Regis Tigers score big win over Charlo
For the St. Regis Tigers, the football game versus Charlo was just what the gridiron doctor ordered.
A game against traditional heavyweight Charlo being what the doctor ordered?
Usually not, but after an opening game loss to another traditional B 8-player power, Mission High, last week, their convincing 54-12 win over the Vikings was good medicine for the football soul.
“It was a great game for the Tigers,” head coach Jesse Allan said. “Exciting to see a bunch of guys getting an opportunity to make plays on both sides of the ball. Charlo is young, but physical and they are only going to get better as the year progresses”.
St. Regis wasted no time getting things going, capping their first drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge, putting them ahead 6-0. The point after touchdown try (PAT) was no good.
A short time later, the Tigers’ defense caught Charlo in the Viking end zone for a two-point safety to make it 8-0. The Tigers defense held and soon thereafter St. Regis scored on a one-yard run. A successful two-point PAT run boosted their lead to 16-0.
St. Regis sophomore quarterback threw a pair of TD passes before the first quarter came to an end. Both PAT tries were good for two points each, lifting the Tigers to a commanding 32-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers kept up the offensive pressure in the second quarter, scoring on a 12-yard run to make it 38-0 after a failed PAT run.
With the St. Regis defense continuing to pitch a first-half shutout, Lulis threw his third TD pass of the game. With a successful PAT attempt, the score stood at 46-0 as the teams entered halftime.
The Tigers scored one more time, a 26-yard TD run in the third quarter to take a 54-0 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Charlo got on the board in the fourth quarter via a four-yard run by Cage Salmein. Before the game ended, the Vikings scored again, this time via a 71-yard touchdown pass to Salmein from quarterback Karson Cox. Both PAT tries were no good, leaving St. Regis with a 54-12 lead, the game’s final tally.
Lulis completed 11 of 17 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns for the game. He also had 41 yards rushing on eight carries.
Senior running back Ayrden Rael led the Tigers ground attack with 72 yards on eight carries. Fellow senior Kaden Sanders added 38 yards on three touches.
Nathan Bohn, a sophomore wide out, had 61 yards on two catches, one of them a TD, to pace the Tigers air efforts. Hunter Stolla, a mainstay of the program for three years, piled up 51 yards on two catches, one of them a TD, while junior Barrett Bassette hauled in three balls for 43 yards and a TD.
Stolla had one rushing TD and one receiving TD for the Tigers.
Bassette led the Tigers with nine tackles, while Bohn and Denver Thomas had five each.
“Conner had a solid game,” Allan said. “His receivers did an excellent job of creating plays after the catch. Bassette had a monster night on defense and made an exceptional play, chasing down a Charlo ball carrier and forcing a fumble that would have been a score”.
The Tigers have a bye this coming week, then take the short hop down I-90, Friday, September 20 to take on Mineral County rival Superior on the Bobcats home turf.
