Volunteers spruced up a dozen yards on Saturday during the Plains Fall Beautification Day.

Fifteen volunteers took time out of their day to help beautify a small part of the town. Volunteers were broken up into teams and assigned to different homes.

“We had quite a few new volunteers this time,” commented Lana Dicken, one of the event’s organizers. “Several of them said they were glad they volunteered and planned to volunteer again in the future.”

Beautifications Day is a community-wide event each spring and fall, and local businesses help with donations. Trash bags and gloves were donated by Gambles, with hotdog and buns supplied by McGowans. During the break for lunch, volunteers were treated to lunch donated, cooked and served at the pool park by Henry and Laura Raber.

Two returning volunteers, Donna Maughlin and Diane Bickenheuser, call themselves, “The Senior Support Group.” They signed up to clean two locations this fall. Bill Beck and Anita Marsh were two more past participants.

All the scheduled work was completed by 2:20 p.m.

“We will continue to provide cleanup days twice per year, fall and spring,” Dicken said. “I think it’s very important for our community and a great reminder to think about others. Compassion is rarely convenient, as pastor Jim Sinclair used to always say.”
