Whitefish tops Noxon-Thompson Falls baseball
It was another hard week for the Noxon-Thompson Falls baseball team as they continued to battle for their first win of the year.
This past Monday, the Savage Horsemen lost on the road to Bigfork, 15-0. A second game scheduled for last week against Sanders County rival Plains-Hot Springs was rained out.
Then this past Thursday they put five runs on the scoreboard, their most so far this year, but fell to Whitefish 16-5 in Noxon.
In the game against Whitefish, Noxon-T Falls (NTF) took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play, holding the powerful Bulldogs scoreless in the top of the frame.
But Whitefish roared back and put three runs on the board in the top of the second inning.
But NTF tied the score in the bottom of the second with a solo run.
Then, in the top of the third, Whitefish erupted for nine runs, giving them a 12-3 advantage. The Bulldogs kept the Savage Horsemen scoreless in the bottom of the third, but Whitefish plated four more runs in the top of the fourth, while continuing to hold NTF without a run.
Leading 16-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, NTF managed to score a pair of runs, but it was not enough to prevent Whitefish from securing the Mercy rule shortened victory.
CJ Yoder, Payton Chambers and Justin Kayser were 1-2 each at the plate for Noxon, with Chambers and Kayser doubling. But the home team struck out nine times as Whitefish improved their record to 4-0 this season.
Tait Orme led the Bulldogs with three RBIs, including a home run. Drew Queen was 3-3 for Whitefish with a pair of RBIs and a double.
In their first game of the week against Bigfork on the road, the hometown Vikings took a 3-0 lead after one inning of play, then increased their advantage to 5-0 after plating two in the bottom of the second.
Bigfork added six runs to their lead in the bottom of the third, then scored four more times in the bottom of the fourth, giving them a 15-0 lead and halting the game via the Mercy rule.
Bigfork outhit NTF 8-1 during the game, with Chambers getting the only hit for the Savage Horsemen, a single.
Hayden Mayer was 2-2 with three RBIs for Bigfork.
Next up for NTF is a game today (April 15) on the road against Eureka.
