Local track teams compete at Seeley Swan
The Plains women’s track team placed fifth at the Seeley Swan High School track and field meet this past Friday at Missoula County Public Schools stadium.
The high team finish came despite a long-running streak of individual wins in the women’s discus coming to an end, albeit temporarily.
And in the boys’ competition, Noxon was top among Sanders/Mineral Counties athletes, paced by multiple high finishes by senior Ricky Williams.
In the women’s events, the shock of the day was the second-place finish in the discus by two-time Class B discus champ Alexis Deming, who was runner up to event winner Lillian Boyd of Seeley Swan. Boyd won the discus with a throw of 139-08, while Deming, who has dominated the event in the past three years, threw 129-04.
Kara Christensen, a Hot Springs junior was third in the discus with a personal best throw of 112-03. Savage Heat teammate Georgia Uski was fifth (107-05).
Deming shook it off with a win in the shot put, heaving the iron ball 36-05.75. Three Forks senior Kylie Rowan was second with a toss of 35-04.50, while Uski was fourth at 30-11.
Another Plains state champ, cross-country winner Marina Tulloch, helped the Trotters out with a win in the 3200-meter run, crossing the finish line at the 12:31.57 mark, almost 18 seconds ahead of runner up Aeris Stewart of Shelby. Plains teammate Annika Ercanbrack was fifth with a time of 14:01.30.
And the Trotters also got a points boost from junior Kali Tuma, who placed second in the 400-meter run, which was won by Superior senior Braelyn Mangold with a time of 1:01.70. Plains’ Hayden Rice was sixth this a time of 1:06.31, and Plains freshman Hayden Rice was sixth. Franck (T Falls) was seventh and Abby Yoder of Noxon finished thirteenth.
Tuma also had a third place in the 300-meter hurdles (51:06), while Hot Springs’ Kara Christensen was sixth (54.84). Plains’ Katelyn Subatch was ninth. Tuma and Rice finished sixth and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles respectively.
Another multiple event top 10 placer was Superior’s Maryisa Swope, who finished third in the pole vault (10-0). T Falls vaulter Addyson Deal was seventh with a vault of 8-0, while Lady Hawks teammate Peighton Kenney was ninth (8-0).
Swope also had a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 113-0. Christensen was eighth with a mark of 96-07. Swope added an eighth-place finish in the long jump to her daily haul with a leap of 14-10.
Plains junior Subatch tied for fifth in the high jump (4-8).
The Plains 4X400 meter relay team of Rice, Tuma, Ercanbrack and Subatch took sixth, while the Superior girls’ team of Maggie Haworth, Makenzie Reum, Swope and Mangold were sixth in the 4X100 relay.
In the men’s competition, Noxon senior Ricky Williams was second in the high jump in what was a featured event at the meet. Williams, Superior sophomore Landon Richards and Jefferson High’s John Quigley had all recently cleared 6-4, setting up a solid competition for the high jump title.
Quigley won the title with a leap of 6-4, while Williams and Richards both cleared 6-2. Williams was awarded second based on fewer misses.
Another local 6-4 high jumper, Hot Springs senior Nick McAllister was sixth with a jump of 5-10, while T Falls’ Ian Myers cleared 5-8 in a three-way tie.
Williams also placed second in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 41-08.30. Bigfork’s Tamret Savik won the event with a jump of 45-05.50.
Williams continued his solid meet with a second-place medal in the long jump, leaping 20-0.5, the same distance as winner Noah Pandina of Bigfork, who won the event.
Plains distance standout John Owen Jermyn, a sophomore and state-placer in cross country this past fall, won the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:54.5. Second place went to Dawson Parke of Drummond with a time of 10:10.13. Wesley Adams of Hot Springs came in sixth.
Superior junior George Hanson was tied for fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 10-06, two feet behind event winner Tanner Vick of Power-Dutton-Brady. Superior sophomore Gannon Quinlan was tied with two others for eighth place with a jump of 10 feet even.
Cord Greer of Plains was ninth in the 1600 meters for the Horsemen.
Plains was ninth in the men’s 4X400 relay, and ninth in the 4X400 meter event.
Alberton’s Shea Fredette was ninth in the men’s 800-meter run.
Next up for area track and field competitors is the Top 10 meet today (April 21) at MCPS Stadium in Missoula, followed by the Choteau Invitation this coming Thursday.
