The playoffs were not kind to the Plains boys’ and girls' basketball teams, with both teams losing two games during this past week’s Western 7B District tournament.

The boys lost to St. Ignatius 61-53 in a play-in/seeding game last Tuesday, then fell to Eureka 55-30 in St. Ignatius during consolation round play, eliminating them from the tournament and ending their season.

The same fate was true for the Trotters, who were upended 38-22 in a Eureka play-in/seeding game Tuesday, then were eliminated by Superior 54-36 in St. Ignatius Saturday in the consolation round.  As was the case with the boys' team, the pair of losses ended the Trotters basketball season.

The Trotters fell behind Eureka 10-4 in the opening round last week.  The Lady Lions the outscored Plains 13-5 in the second quarter, giving Eureka a 23-9 halftime lead.

The two teams played even-up most of the rest of the way, with Eureka outscoring Plains15-13 over the final two quarters to secure the win.

Trystan Larsen led the Trotters with six points.

Saturday in St. Ignatius, Superior jumped out to a 15-8 lead over the Trotters after one quarter of play, then added three points to their advantage in the second quarter for a 23-13 halftime lead.

Superior outscored Plains 31-23 in the final two quarters enroute to the 18-point margin of victory. The two losses dropped Plains to 8-11 on the year, while the win by Superior upped their overall mark to 10-12.

Ava Lawyer and Mila Rivinius scored seven points each to lead Plains, while Makenzie Reum topped all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Bobcats, who also got 13 points from sophomore guard Josie Crabb.

The Horsemen, meanwhile, took on St. Ignatius in the first round this past Tuesday and emerged from the first quarter tied with the Bulldogs, 11-11.

The host team outscored Plains 16-1 in the sending quarter, giving them a 27-23 halftime edge.  Plains fought back in the third quarter, trimming three points off the St. Ignatius lead, 40-39, with one quarter left to play.

But the Bulldogs erupted for 21 points in the fourth quarter while limiting Plains to 14 to ice the eight-point win.

High scoring guard Lex LaFrombois led all scorers with 28 points for St. Ignatius.

Saturday, the Plains season came to an end at the hands of Eureka, which held a 15-7 lead after one quarter of play.  The Lions increased their lead to 27-15 at halftime, then outscored the Horsemen 28-15 over the final two quarters of the game enroute to the victory.

The pair of losses closed out Plains’ season with a 6-11 overall mark, while Eureka improved to 9-9 on the year.

Senior guard Darren Standeford, playing his last game for Plains, led the Horsemen with 11 points.  Eureka’s Kyler Kossman led all scorers with 18 for the Lions.
