Surging Noxon sweeps Alberton
There were two games with lopsided outcomes, with the surging Noxon boys and girls sweeping a pair of road games against Alberton, whose teams are showing signs of emerging varsity talent.
The Noxon boys took control early in their game against the Panthers this past Friday night in Alberton, then cruised to an overwhelming 82-30 win, while the Noxon girls, who have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks after a slow start, clipped the Lady Panthers 36-23.
In the boys' game, Noxon’s deep, talented line-up, led by seniors Shane Murray and Ricky Williams overwhelmed Alberton in the first quarter, building a 29-11 lead by the end of the first eight minutes of play and never trailing the rest of the game. Williams poured in 15 points in the initial quarter, including a pair of long-range threes.
The Red Devils kept up the pressure in the second quarter, outscoring Alberton 18-6, with Williams adding seven points to his game total in the second period as Noxon entered the halftime intermission with a daunting47-17 lead.
Amidst the offensive fireworks displayed by Noxon, Alberton junior forward Shea Fredette had eight first quarter points, then added four more in the second as he demonstrated his abilities with several slashing drives to the bucket.
But Noxon’s depth was simply too much for the outmanned Panthers as the Red Devils, behind a trio of deep three-pointers in the third quarter, outscored Alberton 22-10 to coast into the final quarter with a huge 69-27 lead. The Red Devils tacked 10 more points onto their lead in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.
Willaims totaled 29 points in three quarters of play as Noxon reserves got some playing time in the fourth quarter. Murray and Cameron Blair added 13 each for the victors, while Justice Kayser and Shane Hatchel contributed nine points apiece.
Alberton fell to 1-6 on the year, while Noxon improved its overall mark to 3-1 with the win.
In the girls' game, Noxon got out to an 8-4 lead after one quarter of play. The two teams played even-up in the second quarter, scoring eight points each to produce a 16-12 Noxon halftime advantage.
Then, in the third quarter, Noxon’s offense shut down the Lady Panthers while scoring 17 points, including a buzzer beating two-pointer at the end of the third quarter that gave them a 33-15 lead with one quarter to play.
Spearheading the Noxon attack was Seanna Richter who had an unofficial 18 points for the Lady Devils in their win.
Alberton outscored Noxon in the fourth quarter, 6-3, but the lead was too much for them to overcome.
The Lady Panthers, who suited up six players for the game, were down to the minimum five players by game’s end after one of their players injured an ankle in the fourth quarter.
Eighth grader Marley Fredette led Alberton with 12 points on the night, while Arya Ray chipped in seven points for the Lady Panthers.
Next up for Alberton is a pair of road games this Thursday at Victor this, which Alberton’s boys defeated earlier this season.
