Tigers stay undefeated with win over Prospectors
It’s not really a surprise that the St. Regis Tigers boys’ basketball team is off to a “good” start to the season, it is almost expected at the Mineral County school.
Saturday, they traveled to Philipsburg for a game against the Prospectors and came away with a 57-33 win that upped their 2024-25 season mark to 6-0.
Awesome but not unusual for head coach Jesse Allan and crew.
The St. Regis girls also journeyed to Philipsburg where they encountered the Lady Prospectors who handed the visitors a 59-34 defeat.
In the boys' game, St. Regis senior sharpshooter Kaleb Park drained a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter, helping propel the Tigers to a 16-8 lead by the end of the first eight minutes of play.
Park hit another trey in the second quarter along with teammate Nathan Bohn as St. Regis outscored the host team 12-6 on their way to a 28-14 halftime lead.
Sophomore guard Conner Lulis continued the three-point parade in the third quarter, sinking a pair of threes to go with a pair of two-pointers, as St. Regis added six points to their halftime lead. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Tigers were in front 44-24.
They sewed up win number six with a 13-9 fourth quarter scoring advantage to secure the 24-point win.
Lulis led all scorers with a game-best 19 points, while teammate Dillon Thomas threw in 12 for the winners.
In the girls contest, Philipsburg hit a trio of treys in the first quarter on their way to a 20-6 advantage after the first eight minutes of play.
But St. Regis also turned to the three-pointer, with Shannon Todd coming off the bench and draining three treys to go with a three from Shelby Simkins as they battled the Prospectors to a 15-15 second quarter draw that left Philipsburg with a 35-21 halftime lead.
Philipsburg put the game away in the third quarter when they scored 18 points while limiting St. Regis to a single, two-pointer. Heading into the final quarter, the host team was up 53-23,
The never-quit Lady Tigers fought back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Philipsburg 11-6, but it was not enough to overcome the big deficit they were in.
Philipsburg hit eight three-pointers during their win, while St. Regis had six treys. Todd led St. Regis in scoring with nine points, all in her second quarter three-point spree.
St. Regis is now 2-3 on the year.
Next up for the Tigers and Lady Tigers is a pair of games this Friday (Jan 10) at Seeley-Swan, then a home game the following night (Jan 11) versus Troy.
