Fair commission renews demolition derby contract
The Sanders County Fair Commission addressed several key issues at its first meeting of 2025.
Members reviewed two proposals for the renewal of the Demolition Derby contract. The first proposal came from local resident Rick Sanders, who chose to withdraw his bid during the meeting. Sanders stepped down to avoid any potential conflict of interest, given his recent appointment to the fair commission. He will begin his two-year term in February, after being one of three candidates who applied for the open seat.
Following Sanders’ withdrawal, the commission unanimously approved a two-year contract renewal with FOS Promotions, the previous contractor.
Tim Denson, owner of FOS Promotions, shared on Facebook, “As much as we’ve enjoyed hosting the Carnage on the Clark Fork, we’ve decided not to promote a derby in Plains this year.”
Denson explained that his decision was influenced by past conflicts with one of the newly appointed commission members.
Another item on the agenda was the appointment of a new vice president for the commission. Sanders County Commissioner John Holland raised concerns about the commission possibly not following proper procedures, suggesting a review of the commission’s bylaws before proceeding. As a result, the discussion was tabled until next month.
Fair Manager Kristy Sheehan shared plans for significant upgrades to the fairgrounds in 2025, particularly in the area of electrical systems. The upgrades will include replacing electrical pedestals in the campgrounds, adding additional service locations with 50-amp boxes, and enhancing the electrical systems for food service booths and 4-H barns.
The fairgrounds Pavilion will also see improvements.
Sheehan also discussed efforts to increase attendance at the fairgrounds through concerts. She is considering booking Jacquie Roar, a recent fourth-place finisher on The Voice, if she is available. The concert is planned for either Wednesday evening or after the Saturday night rodeo.
This meeting set the stage for exciting developments at the fairgrounds in 2025, with a focus on infrastructure improvements and events designed to draw in larger crowds.
