Hawks sweep Eureka Lions
After a pair of resounding home wins over rival Plains this past Friday, the Thompson Falls boys’ and girls' basketball teams were looking for a Western 7B conference sweep as they entertained Eureka Saturday night in T Falls.
They got their sweep, with the girls downing the Lady Lions 54-30, and the T Falls boys beating Eureka 58-44.
The Lady Hawks took an early lead in their game with the visiting Eureka girls, jumping out to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looking back.
By halftime, T Falls held a 26-14 advantage as junior forward Gabi Hannum dominated inside play. The Lady Hawks then stretched that halftime lead in the third quarter, when the outscored Eureka 21-4, giving them a 47-18 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Eureka outscored T Falls 12-7 in the final quarter but the big T Falls lead was too much for them to overcome.
Hannum led all game scorers with 22 points and got help from teammates Addy Deal and Aubrey Baxter, who scored 10 points each.
Brynn Miller topped Eureka, which fell to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in 7B conference play, with eight points. The win boosted T Falls to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play, good for first place.
In the boys' game, Eureka battled the Blue Hawks to a 13-13 tie after the first eight minutes of play. In the second quarter Eureka outscored T Falls 12-8 to take a 25-21 halftime lead.
The Blue Hawks trimmed two points off the Eureka lead by the end of the third quarter, then erupted for 24 fourth quarter points while holding the visitors to eight points as they erased the early Eureka lead and rolled to their eighth win of the season. The Blue Hawks sit atop the Western 7B standings with a 3-0 mark.
Senior forward Bryson LeCoure led all scorers with 17 points for the home team, which also got 15 points from senior Kaiden Robins and 12 from Owen Doyle.
This week the T Falls boys and girls host Troy this Thursday (Jan 23), then head to Superior Saturday (Jan 25) for a pair of games against the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats. All four of those games are 7B conference match ups.
