Red Devils take down Charlo
If offense is your thing when it comes to basketball, Noxon’s Red Devils boys’ team is for you.
The Red Devils won their eighth straight game after a season opening loss with a wild, 95-85 win over Charlo this past Saturday in Charlo. Earlier in the week they beat Clark Fork, Idaho in Noxon, 70-43, their lowest scoring total in recent weeks.
Over the course of those eight wins, they scored 633 points, for an average score per game of 79.1 points.
Noxon’s girls, meanwhile, held on to beat Clark Fork 42-30 in Noxon, then ran into Western 13C power Charlo on the Lady Vikings’ home court and fell, 58-21.
Saturday night in Charlo, the Noxon boys erupted for 27 points in the first quarter while holding the host Vikings to 7 to take a 20-point lead into the second quarter. The lead remained unchanged in the second quarter, when both teams scored 19 points, giving Noxon the lead at the halftime intermission.
Noxon, which got a season-high 39 points from sharpshooter Shane Hatchel, added four points to their lead in the third quarter, then watched as Charlo erupted for 35 points in the fourth quarter while Noxon, with mostly reserves on the court, scored 21.
But the large early Noxon lead was too much for Charlo to overcome as the Red Devils hung on for the 13C conference win. They are one victory behind conference leader St. Regis (10-0, 5-0) with a showdown between the two teams set for this Saturday (Jan 25) in Noxon.
Charlo was paced by Karson Cox who led all scorers with 54 points.
In addition to Hatchel scoring outburst, the Red Devils got 26 points from forward Shane Murray, 13 from Cameron Blair and 11 from Ricky Williams.
Thursday night against Clark Fork, Idaho, the Red Devils ran off to a 19-6 lead after the first eight minutes of play behind Murray’s eight first quarter points, and seven from Hatchel.
Noxon added to its lead in the second quarter, outscoring Clark Fork 20-14 to build a 39-20 halftime lead. Murray added five points to his scoring total in the second quarter as he led the Red Devils with 22 points despite sitting out the fourth quarter of the lopsided win.
Hatchel added 17 to the Noxon effort against the Idaho squad, with nine of those points on a trio of three-pointers.
The Noxon girls fell behind Charlo Saturday night in Charlo, trailing 15-6 after the first quarter. Charlo is currently tied for third in the 12-team 13C conference with a 4-1 record.
The Lady Vikings kept up the pressure in the second quarter as their defense held Noxon to two points, while their offense scored 23, giving the host team a 38-8 lead at the half.
Charlo outscored Noxon 20-13 in the second half to secure the conference win.
Seanna Richter scored a game-high 16 points for the Lady Devils, while Charlo got double-figure scoring from four players, led by Brielle Zempel’ 13.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Devils took on Clark Fork, Idaho in Noxon and jumped out to an 18-2 first quarter lead. But Clark Fork outscored Noxon 13-5 in the second quarter, leaving Noxon with a 23-15 halftime lead.
Noxon scored nine points in the third quarter to increase their halftime lead to 32-21, then outscored the visitors 10-9 in the final quarter to secure the non-conference win.
Richter led all game scorers with 18 points.
Next up for the Noxon boys and girls is a road game this Friday (Jan 24) at Hot Springs, followed by home games against St. Regis Saturday (Jan 25).
