St. Regis boys get two wins
As country legend Buck Owens sang, “it looks like I’ve got a Tiger by the tail”, he was likely not referring to the St. Regis Tigers.
But opposing players and coaches could relate to the “losing sleep and feeling kinda pale” lines in the song as the Tigers rolled into the second half of the 2024-25 Class C high school basketball season with a pair of lopsided victories this past weekend.
The 10-0 boys rolled past Alberton on the Panthers home court 46-22 Thursday, then returned to their home court and cruised by Charlo 65-46.
Meanwhile, the St. Regis girls were victorious over Alberton, 44-25, before falling to Charlo in St. Regis, 62-30.
Thursday in Alberton, the St. Regis boys blew out to a 13-1 lead after the first quarter behind their signature swarming, ball-hawking defense. The Tigers continued to expand their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the hometown Panthers 15-6 on their way to a 28-7 halftime advantage.
The big first half lead allowed the Tigers to get some valuable playing time for their young reserves as they roll toward the Western 13C playoffs. Perhaps their biggest test of the season comes this Saturday when they take on the red-hot Noxon Red Devils in Noxon. Friday (Jan 24) St. Regis will be on their home court when they take on Two Eagle River. Both games are 13C conference games.
Against Alberton, St. Regis outscored the Panthers 18-15 over the final two quarters to seal the victory.
Senior forward Kaden Sanders led a balanced, well-distributed offense with eight points as 10 Tigers scored during the game.
Alberton standout junior forward Shea Fredette scored a game-high 15 points for the Panthers.
Friday night at home, St. Regis fell behind Charlo early, trailing 11-7 after the first eight minutes of play. That Viking lead did not last very long as the Tigers roared back, outscoring Charlo 18-9 in the second quarter and rolling into the halftime break with a 25-20 advantage.
In the third quarter, senior guard Kaleb Park scored 10 points, including one three-pointer as the Tigers padded their lead by five, taking a 43-33 lead into the final quarter of play.
Seven Tigers scored in the final quarter as St. Regis out-pointed Charlo 22-13 to secure the 19-point victory.
Park led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points, while Charlo was topped by Karson Cox who scored a game-best 19 for Charlo.
The two conference wins boosted St. Regis to 5-0 in Western 13C play.
The Lady Tigers opened their week in Alberton where they scratched out a 15-7 lead after the first quarter as two players scored five points each.
Alberton was held to four points in the second quarter while St. Regis scored eight, giving the home team a 23-11 halftime edge.
St. Regis’ Mae Grosenbaugh scored six points in the third quarter, as they outscored the Alberton 9-8, giving St. Regis a 32-19 lead with one quarter to play.
The Lady Tigers added six to their lead in the fourth quarter to ice the conference win.
Alberton’s Marley Fredette led all scorers with 11 points on the night.
Friday night in St. Regis, the 8-2 Charlo Lady Vikings rolled into town and promptly took a 14-6 first quarter lead. The second quarter was nearly identical to the first one, leaving the visitors in front 28-14 at the half.
Charlo went on to outscore St. Regis 34-16 in the second half to run their 13-C record to 4-1. The loss dropped the Lady Tigers, who played without standout guard Shylah Dalka, to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Shannon Todd paced the Lady Tigers with 11 points, while Charlo got a game-high 19 points from Seeley McDonald.
Next on the schedule for the Lady Tigers are a pair of conference games, Friday (Jan 24) against Two Eagle River in St. Regis, then a road game the following night in Noxon.
