Plains hoopers drop two home games
It was a tough week for the Plains boys’ and girls’ basketball teams as both lost home games to St. Ignatius (Mission) Thursday night and Eureka this past Saturday.
The boys lost to St. Ignatius 73-66 in a high-scoring game Thursday night, then fell to Eureka 53-24 Saturday.
The Trotters dropped their game with St. Ignatius by a 63-19 score, then lost to Eureka, 35-34 Saturday night.
In the girls’ game versus Eureka, Plains eked out a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter in a preview of the back-and-forth battle that would ensue.
The Trotters outscored the Lady Lions 15-11 in the second quarter, giving them a narrow, 22-17 halftime advantage.
Eureka fought back in the third quarter, erasing the Plains halftime lead and giving themselves a one-point lead heading into the final quarter of regulation.
The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter as Eureka held onto their one-point lead as the final horn sounded.
Katelyn Subatch and Ava Lawyers had nine points each to pace Plains in scoring, while Mila Rivinius added seven to the Trotters effort.
Earlier in the week, the Trotters fell behind early in their game against St. Ignatius, trailing the Bulldogs 13-4 after the first quarter.
St. Ignatius held the Trotters to four points again in the second quarter while tossing in 21 of their own, giving them a commanding 34-8 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs added one point to their lead in the third quarter, then erupted for 21 points in the final quarter while once again limiting Plains to four points to close out the lopsided victory. Rivinius led Plains with six points, while Kiernan Incashola topped all scorers with 11 points for the Bulldogs.
In the boys games, the Horsemen were once again without the services of standout senior guard Darren Standeford, who missed has missed the last several games with an undisclosed injury. He is expected back soon.
Plains took a 14-12 first quarter lead in their game against St. Ignatius, but the visitors outscored the Horsemen 20-17 in the second quarter to secure a one-point, 32-31 halftime edge.
The Bulldogs scored 23 points in the third quarter while limiting Plains to 16, giving St. Ignatius a 55-47 lead with one quarter to play.
Plains managed to trim one point off that lead, but it was not enough to overcome the St. Ignatius lead.
Lex LaFrombois had a huge night for the Bulldogs, tossing in a game-best 40 points. Plains senior forward Zayden Allen also had a big game, scoring 28 to lead the Horsemen, who also got 16 from Luciano Ferranti.
Saturday against the Eureka Lions, the Plains boys fell behind 14-2 after the first eight minutes of play, then played even up with the visitors in the seconde quarter. At the half, Eureka led 22-10.
The Lions outscored Plains 31-14 in the second half to wrap up the Western 7B conference win. Ferranti led Plains with six points, while Allen chipped in five.
The two conference losses dropped the Horsemen to 1-5 in 7B conference play and 4-7 on the year.
Plains’ teams have just one game scheduled this week, a Thursday (Jan 30) road trip to Alberton for games against the Panthers and Lady Panthers.
