St. Regis teams take down Two Eagle River
St. Regis is not a great place to go.
If you are an opposing high school basketball team.
The latest pair of opponents to experience a Tiger attack is Two Eagle River (TER), whose boys came to town this past weekend and lost to the unbeaten St. Regis boys 62-46.
And the resurgent Lady Tigers were not exactly the welcoming committee to the Two Eagle River Lady Eagles, saddling them with a 56-32 defeat that same Friday evening.
The male Tigers fell behind TER 13-11 after the first quarter of play versus the always athletic and fast Eagles. But the Tigers, who upped their overall season record to 11-0 with the win, showed why they are unbeaten so far this year when they outscored TER 20-9 in the second quarter behind their smothering defense that gave them a 31-21 halftime lead.
Sophomore guard Conner Lulis scored nine of his team and game-best 24 points in the second quarter to fuel the Tigers’ surge. He then added eight more points to his haul in the third quarter as the Tigers matched the Eagles point for point to maintain their lead at 52-42, heading into the final quarter.
Lulis added five more points in the final eight minutes of play as St. Regis outscored the visitors 10-4 to secure the convincing Western 13C conference victory.
Senior guard Ayden Rael also scored in double figures for the Tigers with 12, including a pair of threes, while Nathan Bohn added 10 for St. Regis.
Talon Addison topped TER with 16 points, as the Eagles fell to 5-7 on the year with the loss.
Earlier in the evening, the St. Regis girls, who have won four of their last five games, clawed their way to a 12-7 first quarter lead, then increased the margin to 23-15 by halftime.
A balanced scoring attack, led by junior forward Jamie Cleveland (14 points) and the return of point guard Shylah Dalka from injury related time off (11 points) were fundamental in the Lady Tigers first half offense.
In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers once again outscored TER 12-7, boosting their lead to 35-22 with one quarter to play.
Cleveland erupted for nine of her game-high points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Tigers added 11 points to their lead to wrap up the conference win, lifting them to 5-6 on the year and 2-5 in Western 13C play.
A total of nine St. Regis players contributed points during the game, but it was largely their aggression on defense that kept TER off balance throughout the evening.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers also played Saturday night in Noxon and both St. Regis teams came away with wins.
Next up for St. Regis is home games this Friday (Jan 31) against Valley Christian, then a road trip to Drummond for boys’ and girls' games against the Trojans.
