Wood carvers from across the Northwest converged in Plains last weekend for a two-day event sponsored by the Plains Wood Carving Club.

The gathering, hosted for the first time in Plains, drew around 40 participants from Idaho, Washington and Montana, celebrating the art of wood carving through workshops, demonstrations and fellowship.

“This is a casual event meant for carvers to come together, enjoy one another, and share their skills,” said Tom Collins, a local wood carver and president of the Plains club. “It’s about learning, teaching, and just appreciating the artistry of it all.”

Volunteer instructors led hands-on sessions, offering help with various do-it-yourself projects and sharing techniques. Attendees ranged from beginners to seasoned artists.

Plains resident Karen Ryan carved her first Christmas tree, while Janet Brandon, a 30-year veteran, crafted a detailed three-dimensional lighthouse. Collins stated that numerous projects were completed during the two-day convention by the participants.

Notable attendees included George Wilson of Coeur d’Alene, known for his expert bird carvings. Collins also invited Plains native and renowned carver Henry Larum, though the 90-year-old was unable to attend due to health concerns.

Collins, who has been carving for 15 years and specializes in small figurines, recently donated a carving titled Morning Choice to help raise funds for the Greg Welty Memorial Park.

The event also highlighted upcoming opportunities in the carving community. A week-long advanced carving school will be held in Ellensburg, Washington, starting July 14, and the Montana State Wood Carvers Association’s juried show in Missoula is scheduled for the first week of May, where over 200 pieces were displayed last year.

Carvers donated 22 items to be auctioned off during the end of the event.

“We raised more than our expense for this year. We have a little seed money for next year’s event,” stated Collins. Next year’s convention will be held again at the Sanders County Fairgrounds, July 9-11.

Locally, the Plains Wood Carving Club meets every Tuesday from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the VFW in Plains, offering newcomers a chance to explore the craft.
