Rena Mary Johnson, of Plains, Montana, born on October 17, 1952, passed away on May 26, 2025, at the age of 72.

Rena will be remembered for her strong faith, independence and her love of God’s natural beauty. A longtime resident of Plains, she cherished her community and the natural wonder of Montana.

Throughout her life, Rena has been a mentor to others through her roles as a young life leader, teacher, and most importantly as a dedicated Boy Scout Leader to her four sons and to countless amazing individuals. She guided and mentored many scouts over the years, leading them to achieve their Eagle Scout rank and on countless adventures — including high-adventure trips that created lifelong memories and friendships. Her passion for the outdoors and commitment to developing character and leadership in young people will be remembered by many.

More than anything, Rena loved horses. A skilled and devoted horsewoman, she spent countless joyful hours riding, horsepacking through Montana’s wilderness, and teaching others about horsemanship. She shared her deep knowledge and love of horses generously, inspiring many to appreciate these magnificent animals as she did.

Rena was also a passionate gardener and steward of the land. She cared for the heritage Pennock apple tree, a living legacy of her family’s history. Her deep interest in plants and heirloom seeds inspired her to open a local business dedicated to selling heritage seeds and plants, helping others cultivate their own gardens and preserve agricultural traditions. Through this work, she fostered a lasting connection to the land and community that will continue to thrive in her memory.

Rena’s strong Christian faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She was an active member of her local church and participated faithfully in Bible studies and prayer groups. Her devotion and unwavering faith were a source of strength and inspiration to many in her church family and beyond.

Rena’s love of God and nature will live on through her sons: David Ilse, Daniel Ilse, Jonathan Ilse, and Paul Johnson. The strength, fierce independence, self sufficiency, and respect for nature will be passed down through her surviving six grandchildren and three daughter in laws.
Her life touched many, and her memory will be cherished always.
A Celebration of Life will take place on June 21, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at Silver Park in Missoula, Montana. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend.

In lieu of gifts and donations, the family asks that you instead pay it forward in honor of Rena by giving back to, or volunteering at, your local library, church, food bank, shelter, or rescue — continuing her legacy of generosity, and community spirit.
