A near-record number of racers from around the region got an early start to their Saturday morning for the ninth annual Dixon Stampede.

Participants came from as far away as Kalispell, Missoula, Ronan and Hot Springs, joining many local residents. Upon arrival, runners were greeted with a pancake breakfast prepared by volunteers.

As in previous years, students from Dixon School had the chance to design the official Bison Stampede T-shirt. This year's winning artwork came from a third grader, continuing the tradition of showcasing student creativity.

The Bison Stampede is more than just a race — it's a vital fundraiser for the school. This year’s proceeds are earmarked for purchasing new sports jerseys and improving the long jump course with new runway mats and upgrades to the landing area.

Superintendent and Principal Ryon Nolan, in his first year in the role, said, “It’s a good event and a beautiful day. It’s a worthy cause.”

The event’s success was made possible by support from local businesses and organizations, who donated volunteers, equipment, food and prizes. Many school district employees also volunteered their time. Donors included: Valley Bank, Blackfoot Communications, Runner’s Edge, Ron’s Harvest Foods, Uffda Porta Potties, and Tribal Health. For the fifth year, Stuart Morton served as master of ceremonies.

The morning kicked off with the 10K race, featuring six runners — including last year’s winner, 8th grader Sunny Matt. Matt dramatically improved on his previous time of 85 minutes and 4 seconds, taking first place this year with a time of 57 minutes and 3 seconds. Adam Boyd placed second with a time of 59 minutes and 58 seconds, followed by Joey Matt in third at 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 57 seconds.

Next up was the 5K race, which drew 26 runners. Ava Van Maanen claimed first place with a time of 25 minutes and 39 seconds, improving on her previous years’ time of 30 minutes and 13 seconds. Jaxon Courville came in second, and Dazzy Howard took third.

The final event was the Fun Run, which had the highest number of participants—including two dogs named Loki and Coco. Nine-year-old Hadassah Ostler took first place.

“It was a good turnout,” said school secretary Shawna Olsen. Volunteer coordinators included Breezy Stipe and Olsen, who helped ensure the event ran smoothly.
