Sanders County Fairgrounds improvements move forward
The Sanders County Fair Commission focused on several much-needed facility upgrades during its May meeting.
Among the key topics was the condition of the Pavilion roof, which commission members agreed must be repaired soon to prevent further deterioration. The Pavilion has been a subject of debate for decades, with a full replacement once considered.
Fairgrounds Manager Krysty Sheehan solicited bids for the roof repair and received one proposal from All Star Roofing of Hot Springs, totaling $23,725. A timeline for the project has yet to be announced.
Another upcoming improvement includes the replacement of toilets in the carnival area, scheduled to take place over the next two weeks. In addition, repairs were recently completed on the water lines along the horse barns. The work was handled by Von Construction and Tony Ferlan. A long awaited flag pole will be erected that will display the Coast Guard flag.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to planning for the upcoming Demolition Derby. This year’s event will be promoted by Tim O’Brien, who attended the meeting to discuss potential improvements.
One area of concern is the maintenance of the arena grounds. In recent months, commission members have considered various methods for removing rocks from the fairgrounds' multiple arena sites. Options have included purchasing specialized equipment priced at over $35,000 or seeking more affordable used alternatives.
This month’s discussion centered on acquiring a rock bucket attachment for the fairgrounds' existing tractor. Sheehan noted she would continue researching cost-effective solutions and provide an update at the June meeting.
Wendy Carr, Montana State University (MSU) Extension Agent and temporary primary 4-H agent, provided an update on upcoming projects and events planned for the remainder of 2025. Carr noted that the position of full-time 4-H agent will be posted in the near future.
She reported that improvements to the swine barn are expected to be completed by the end of May. Additionally, bids have been requested for electrical upgrades in the 4-H camping area, as well as for repairs to the 4-H bathroom facilities. Grants to complete the projects will be applied for. Plans are also underway to paint the swine, sheep, and horse barns.
Several 4-H events are on the horizon. The swine, sheep, and goat tag and weigh-in event is scheduled for June 1. A 4-H horse camp will be held June 9–10 at the fairgrounds, followed by a horse clinic on July 1. Weekly 4-H riding practices are taking place every Tuesday evening at the 4-H horse arena. A beef hoof trimming event is also being planned, with details to be announced.
Sanders County is looking for a temporary employee to assist Sheehan with the final preparations for the 2025 County fair. Those interested can apply online on the county website.
