On June 5, the grand opening of the Murphy Creek Trail outside of Superior featured a dedication to beloved community member, Roger Hearst who had an outstanding career in the U.S. Forest Service. District Ranger Carole Johnson shared some of the background of how the Murphy Creek Trail system came to fruition. She recalled, "Things got a little heated from time to time when Roger and I were working out the details of this project, but he tell I could take the heat." A handsome log bench was also unveiled in Hearst's honor. It was his dream to see the Murphy Creek area preserved as a recreation site for all to use and enjoy, so now whenever hikers or bikers recreate along the trail they can sit a moment on his bench, think of him and appreciate the beauty. Future plans for the trail include mileage signs, historical markers, and trail connectors sections to create shorter routes. On other side of Southside Ride at Murphy Creek a half mile handicap accessible paved trail will be created next year. (Amy Quinlivan/Mineral Independent)
