Recent deer and elk counts show increase in numbers

Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP) biologist, Liz Bradley gave a presentation at a recent Mineral County Commissioners meeting. Every spring she does elk and deer surveys in Mineral County for Hunting Districts 200-203, 260 west, and 283 west for Region 2. This is her third year of flying with Mark Musick of Minute Man Aviation. Musick has been doing these surveys since late 80s and she commented that it was nice to have that consistency with same pilot for so many years.

The commissioners met with representatives involved in the EPA’s cleanup of Superior last month and decided that sometime this spring, in March or April, a meeting with the public would be held to go over what’s been accomplished, results and what still needs to be completed.

“See how high the hornet’s nest, ‘twill tell how high the snow will rest.” This is an old farmer’s saying, and if hornets’ behavior this fall holds true, there will be relatively less snow this winter. There have been a lot of reports of hornets flying close to the ground and getting into homes through doors and windows. An indication that their nests are closer to the ground. “If you see a wasp’s nest built low to the ground, expect little snow. If you see one built high, expect a lot of snow,” the weather lore tells us.
