Plains split its first two varsity boys’ basketball games of the season at the Western C Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown, falling to Drummond 53-47 and rebounding to earn a 54-32 victory over Valley Christian.

The holidays can be a stressful time and Nancy Smith with Choices Counseling in Superior offered tools and words of advice how to “De-Stress — not Distress.” The luncheon was hosted by Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Superior and Mineral County Licensed Addition Counseling (LAC) on Nov. 30 at the Choices Conference Center in Superior.
Hospital CEO receives two-year contract extension
Last week, the Mineral Community Hospital Board of Directors extended hospital CEO Steve McNeece’s contract for another two years. They also extended CAH Solutions Group, Laura Austin, for two years. Both McNeece and Austin have been working on a number of improvements to the hospital since June. Austin’s focus is on the finances while McNeece has been working with the hospital board, employees and department directors to define and work toward priorities and goals for the hospital.
Grinch makes appearance in Alberton
As people gathered in the Alberton community center to enjoy an evening of games and a potluck dinner late last week, a peculiar character was perched in the corner of the room. It was a green furry fellow, with a pot-belly and snub-nosed dressed in a Santa suit. Dr. Seuss fans would immediately recognize the popular 1957 character from the story “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” — the famous Grinch himself.

The Trinity Lutheran Church in Superior began Advent Sunday, Dec. 2. Their midweek services will occur on Thursdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20 with soup supper at 6 p.m. and worship at 7 p.m.

When Kenton Pies moved to Sanders County in 2005, it was his goal to create an “art mecca.” Not to be confused with the Muslims, the Webster third definition calls “mecca” “anything that one greatly desires or tries to achieve.”

Fruit grows on trees, in season, all around the world. But the tree that is now in season in Sanders County is the Tree of Hearts.
Hunting harvest shows decline
General rifle season ended on Nov. 25 and a report for Region 2 during the third week of hunting by Fish, Wildlife & Parks showed a decline in the number of hunters and harvest. The total number of hunters in 2018 was 8,027, down from 9,317 for the same time period last year, with a total of 616 animals harvested compared to 818 in 2017.
Basketball, wrestling teams gear up for successful seasons
As soon as high school students hung up their cleats and volleyball pads, basketball practice started with tournaments this weekend. Basketball players will be at the Western C Tip Off Tournament in Frenchtown on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Meanwhile, wrestlers will be at the Owen Invite, hosted by Polson.
Forest Service streamlines projects as budget cuts deepen
Forest Service projects with the Superior and Ninemile districts are slowing down as winter sets in and fire crews are leaving the area District Rangers, Carole Johnson from Superior and Ann Hadlow from Ninemile reported at a recent Mineral County Commissioners’ meeting held on Nov. 16.
Becky Magone re-opens barbershop after many years away
After closing her shop in Superior several years ago, Becky Magone is back. She reopened her barbershop, Becky’s Superior Cuts and Emporium. It’s located in the old post office at 101 ½ River Street. In the space that used to be the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce office. Becky has been cutting hair for 43 years and 30 of those had been in Superior.
St. Regis school board one of two recognized statewide
The St. Regis School Board was recognized as one of two School Boards of the Year in Montana for its efforts in policies, facilities, and programs at St. Regis. School Superintendent Joe Steele, who nominated the board for the award, said he has been impressed with the school board’s vision, and those past board members who initiated their vision.

Six Sanders and Mineral county youth advanced to the district level of the Elks National Hoop Shoot in January with first-place finishes at the Clark Fork Valley Elks Hoop Shoot held Sunday, Nov. 11 at Thompson Falls High School.

Hot Springs Lions Club hosts fundraiser
Lions Club International chapters around the world have a great reputation for serving communities in need, and the Hot Springs Lions Club got excellent support during their OGNIB fundraiser Sunday afternoon and evening at Hot Springs School. The multi-purpose room was filled to capacity as game players vied to take home items that filled the stage.

Need for healthcare workers continues to grow in area
For several years Mineral County high school students have been able to spend a day at Mineral Community Hospital to explore careers in health care. Working with the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and Research and Explore Awesome Careers in Healthcare, or REACH, students can explore a number of careers. Including lab work; X-rays; CT or computed tomography scanning; dentistry; public health; nursing; and emergency medical training.
