Superior holds round-up of future kindergartners
Wednesday morning was the first day of an exciting new career at school for next year's kindergarten class at Superior Elementary School.
Opening of Rock Creek mine moving forward
Two representatives from Revett Minerals Inc. gave a presentation Wednesday in Thompson Falls as to the status of the Rock Creek Mine they plan to open in north Sanders County, saying they only want to be “good neighbors and part of the community.” Part of their contribution to the community will be the addition of about 300 new jobs.
Coalition takes big steps at meeting
The Sanders-Mineral Counties National Forest Stakeholders Coalition held its latest meeting last Tuesday in the basement of First Security Bank in Plains. At the meeting the coalition passed its bylaws, discussed the future of the group and officially adopted their first two projects.

I have read the stories that contained some facts, but mostly opinions and hearsay each week about Dan Resler. Against my better judgment, I can't stay quiet any longer. I for one think that we should commend Dan for taking total responsibility for what he has done.

Fire crews train for car accident extrication
The Valley Towing wrecking yard was full of fire trucks, men using the Jaws of Life and tearing apart cars Saturday, but not because anyone was in danger. More than 20 firefighters from the Plains Fire Department and the Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District practiced extrication for car accident situations under the guidance of Craig Jeppson from the Fire Services Training School.

The Plains Trap Club continued to hold its number one status in the 2008 Big Sky Postal Trap Shoot after four weeks of competition.
Looking to keep the final SRO
The School Resource Officer program is up in the air once again. Dwindled down to one SRO - Sanders County Deputy Chris McGuigan - last year after a levy to continue both slots was defeated by county voters, the Sanders County Sheriff's Office is one again looking for support from the schools to keep that one SRO.

Students in Plains have extra incentive to read, thanks in large part to the local Masonic lodge. Masonic Ponemah Lodge 63 donated bicycles on March 14 to five students - whose names were drawn from a hat - in grades three through six.
Witness, juror fees raise cost of Guill trial
The longest trial ever in Sanders County, which found Douglas Guill guilty of all five felonies last week, came at a high cost. Clerk of District Court Dianne Rummel said she wouldn't be surprised if the cost amounted to around $25,000 because of the many witness fees and juror compensations.

Little Guy season finishes in Missoula
More than 500 matches were conducted at the Western Montana State Little Guy Wrestling Championships in Missoula Saturday, and by the time the gymnasium at Sentinel High School was cleared, the names of 10 Sanders County athletes ended up in the top four placements.

Two Superior Little Guys take first
A wrestler didn't have to make it to the championship round or even place in the top four spots to celebrate. Such was the case for Superior Bobcat Tyler Wharry, who competed in the 125-pound junior high class, and claimed his first victory of the year. Immediately following his triumph, Wharry cheered, jumped in jubilation, and gleefully shook the hand of Superior assistant coach Gary Tourtelotte. The eighth-grader won his match against Frenchtown Bronc Colby Hagen 14-0.

Teams hit wet, frozen bases
Noxon High School's softball diamond is still buried by snow, but that hasn't stopped the Lady Red Devils from getting in their practices. The 11 girls from the Lady Devs will be using the school gymnasium until the winter white stuff goes away, but head coach Mike Herbig doesn't yet see an end in sight.
