Suspected mountain lion attack near city limits

PLAINS – A suspected mountain lion attack occurred in Plains late last week. The victim, a four-year old mare named Missy was discovered by her owners Lisa and Kent Stewart with scratches on the left side of her hind quarters. While incidents like this are rare according to numbers from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the Stewarts remain concerned.

Football practice got underway for the teams across Mineral County last week. In Alberton, thirteen kids hit the field that will play for the Alberton Panthers this season. Coach Jake Giffin said that while the number of kids is good, he said it is lower.

After only one meet, the Plains High School track and field team has put up some impressive numbers. Ben Gorham had his longest toss ever in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, four inches. Gorham accomplished the feat under less than desirable conditions, throwing in a downpour at the meet in Ronan.

A Senior Health and Information fair was held on Saturday in the Superior Elementary School Gym. Mary Jo Berry organized the event and said 25 vendors were on hand to answer questions and promote their businesses and organizations.

Busy summer ahead for area Forest Service crews

Forest Service agencies are gearing up for a busy summer with a number of projects in the works. Nate Kegel, and Carole Johnson with the Superior Ranger District met on separate occasions, with County Commissioners regarding the status of several projects in the Superior Ranger District. There was also a community meeting with the Ninemile Ranger District regarding updates on the Soldier Butler fuels reduction project, as well as other projects in the area.
