Northwest Montana hunter, bowhunter, instructors honored

Multiple Hunter and Bowhunter Education Instructors from Sanders County received service awards from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks during the annual Region 1 Instructor Workshop, which was held on March 2 at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell. A total of 34 instructors received service awards ranging from 5 to 35 years of service. All service award recipients received a plaque and additional awards included an engraved knife for 10 years of service and a FWP belt buckle for 20 years of service. A number of other awards were also presented.

A pickup truck was struck by a train just west of the Cyr Exit on Tuesday morning, Feb. 19. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the railroad crossing off Daigle Lane. An unidentified male was driving a white pickup truck when he was struck dead center and dragged a half a mile down the tracks by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive.

A Plains man is accused of attempting to distribute drugs in Lake County. Leon Charles Hendry, 55, entered a plea of not guilty in District Court in Polson Jan. 15 to criminal possession with intent to distribute.

Sunday marked the close of the 2017 general big game hunting season with west-central Montana check stations reporting the highest harvest in four years and the highest hunter success rate since 2007 according to a report by Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

St. Regis Travel Center robbed at gun point

ST. REGIS – At approx. 2:43 a.m. on Friday January 17, 2014, a lone male entered the Saint Regis Travel Center and robbed the convenience store of an undisclosed amount of cash.  The male suspect entered the store and demanded money and exhibited a weapon, which is believed to be a black semi-automatic pistol of an unknown make and caliber.  The male suspect is described as being about 6 feet in height with a thin build, wearing a black coat over a blue hoodie that was pulled over the head, and a black bandanna that covered the face. The suspect also wore black colored sweat pants with white shoes that have black markings.

Whitetail deer numbers down for northwest Montana

SANDERS COUNTY - Hunters took to the field Saturday and Sunday across northwest Montana for the opening weekend of the general deer and elk season. At the six northwest Montana check stations, a total of 2,900 hunters checked 85 white-tailed deer (66 of these were bucks), 16 mule deer, and 17 elk for a 4.1 percent rate of hunters with game. This compares with a 5.5 percent rate of hunters with game last year at the check stations.
