Text-to-911 program now available for emergencies

Bright red and white fliers are being posted around Mineral County as the Sheriff’s Department has implemented a new Text-to-911 program. The posters read “Call if you can, Text if you can’t”.

Local veterans, leukemia patient receive comfort quilts from Cabin Fever Quilt Guild

Two lucky local veterans received comfort quilts, complements of the Cabin Fever Quilt Guild. Guild member, Birdie Warnken, recently paid a visit to Kenton Lewis and his brother, Tim Lewis who are both Navy veterans. She presented them with two quilts, one was white with brightly colored, crystal star type work surrounded by a beautiful blue border. The other was checkered with forest green squares and images of pine trees, bordered with a light red design.

Most Sanders County schools received a passing grade from the No Child Left Behind school results which were released last Friday. According to the Montana Office of Public Instruction Web site, out of 17 schools tested, only four failed to meet adequate yearly progress (AYP) scores for the 2007-2008 school year.

Martin Luther King, Jr. honored in Mineral County schools

Mineral County students honored Martin Luther King, Jr. over the past couple of weeks with projects and reports. Not just to honor his memory, but also to honor the principles for which he was an advocate. January 18 was MLK Day, and Alberton and St. Regis schools took it as a holiday, although Superior held classes.

Nearly 50 traffic incidents reported in Mineral County

Nearly 50 incidents were reported by the Montana Highway Patrol in Mineral County from Feb. 4 through Monday morning on Feb. 11. Adverse weather continues to pound the area with heavy snow and high winds — creating hazardous driving conditions. There were also two-hour school delays for Mineral County schools on Feb. 4. Statewide, there were more than 80 slide-offs and 180 crashes reported by the Highway Patrol on Feb. 4.

Residents at Mineral Community Hospital have a new four-legged friend named Storm Trooper. He’s just over a year old and already has started his career as a certified therapy dog. Linda Reineke is Trooper’s trainer and she said the white English lab came out of her first litter of pups, and he’s the first one she’s trained.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day is a day of commemoration for servicemen unaccounted for or missing and will soon be celebrated in America on September 19th, the official date for 2014 as established by a proclamation signed by the President on a yearly basis.  This day of recognition is a day not only to remember our Prisoners of War and our Missing in Action (POW/MIA) servicemen and women, but is a day to remind America of its responsibility to do everything in its power to account for those who are missing or captive.

Months seek to bring awareness to skin cancer, sun safety

The most diagnosed type of cancer in the United States is also the cancer that is not only treated the most successfully, but also the type of cancer that is perhaps the most preventable. According to Terry Egan, cancer control program coordinator for region one (Missoula, Mineral and Ravalli counties) for the Montana Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (MCCCP), a supporting partner to the Montana Cancer Control Coalition (MTCCC), over one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the states this year.

An eerie orange glow crept between the summer sun and a dark plume of smoke on Quartz Loop Road late Wednesday afternoon on July 26. It left a feeling of impending doom as the column of smoke rose higher into the hazy sky. Forest Service crews cast a wary eye toward the ridge overlooking Meadow Creek Road, on the east side of the Sunrise Fire. A horse-shoe shaped fire which had been burning in the area since Sunday, July 16.
