HOT SPRINGS – Stacks of paper envelope the house. With them, there is the occasional piece of newspaper or napkin complete with scribbles. Amidst the notes a woman writes, her mind consumed with the voices of characters. Hot Springs local Susan Faye Roberts has been dabbling in the arts since she was a little girl. When she was around six years old, Roberts wrote, directed and starred in an original play with her classmates.

Taft mountains hold 'secret' of missing cemetery

The mountains surrounding the legendary saloon town of Taft, Mont., holds a silent grip on its deceased residents. As the massive fires of 1910 swept through the canyons of Mineral County, the blaze took the town with it, including the cemetery. A cemetery with wooden markers which turned to ash and disappeared. Now, nearly 110 years later, the search is on to find the 72 buried souls lost to a century of forest growth and erosion.

Tobacco Education Funding

Last week I was in Helena for the Soles for Souls display where 1,400 pairs of shoes lined the halls of the Capitol to draw attention to the yearly tobacco deaths in Montana. I was moved by the variety of shoes, everything from hot pink stiletto heels to beaded leather moccasins,  represented how indiscriminate tobacco is as a killer of innocent people. Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease in Montana. In Sanders County there were 172 deaths due to tobacco from 2004-2009.

Last February, Rene Haynes was standing in line at a Los Angeles Costco when her phone buzzed. She didn’t recognize the number, but as a Hollywood casting director, she’s used to urgent calls from strange numbers at all hours of the day. This one was from a fellow casting director, Mark Bennett. He was looking for Native actors to audition for a lead role in an independent film set in Montana.
