An update from Rep. Schwaderer

I grew up on Diamond Match road, originally built by the company that used to operate the mill at the end of the road that is now home to several local woods products employers. I learned to drive a four-wheeler with family on Plum Creek private timber land. In Kindergarten (I was the last year to attend the Old School in Superior), we learned how to tell the difference between a Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine based on foliage (roughly half the class already knew the difference). My dad, brother, extended family and I have conducted our summerly firewood gathering for the last 22 years of my life like most folks in this neck of the woods.

A Christmas memory: Serenity and solitude at the Mike Patrick place

It was early Christmas morning, around 5 o’clock. I had woken up and looked out the window to see a clear, moonlit night. A good time for a walk, I thought. I was sixteen years old — almost, my birthday was the next day — and I rose and dressed quietly so as not to wake my parents. I went very slowly down the back stairs from my bedroom, trying to avoid the steps that creaked, found a coat and hat and unlocked the back door. Outside, I discovered that it would be an even better walk than I thought. There was about a foot of snow, which would have been slow walking, but it had crusted overnight and was hard enough to walk on. It was very easy going.

Plains, Hot Springs girls roll at Tip-Off Tourney

I’m dreaming of some threes for Christmas. Like the ones my team can drain. Where the gym walls rattle, and outside the cattle, think we humans must have gone insane.

Melanie's farewell column: Relations matter most

Ninety-seven issues. That’s my number here at Valley Press – Mineral Independent. It may even be 98, but that very first issue in April of 2011 when I started here was just a few photos of an Easter egg hunt in Superior. Little did I know what lay ahead of me; little did I know how much things would change, and how the slightest, tiniest decisions can create ripple effects that touch so many others.
