Roni Phillips takes helm as new jail administrator
Roni Phillips has been hired as the new Mineral County Jail Administrator. A position created by a special jail committee after the county’s Detention Center closed on Dec. 3, 2017 due to a shortage of detention officers. Several steps have been taken to get the jail reopened, including the hiring of Phillips for this new position.

Hazmat incidents aren’t things that residents usually think of, however with the state government scrapping the funding for regional hazmat, there are more then a few questions left unanswered.

Mike Boone appointed as new sheriff
In a unanimous decision, Mineral County Undersheriff Mike Boone was appointed county sheriff during the commissioners meeting last Friday, Dec. 8. Three applicants submitted their resumes for the position including Mike Toth who was previously a Mineral County deputy and another man who had recently retired with a law enforcement background who planned to move to Superior from Washington.
Third annual Western C Tip-Off Tournament held in Frenchtown
It was the third annual Western C Tip-Off Tournament held on Friday and Saturday in Frenchtown on Dec. 1 and 2. The tournament is hosted in part by Alberton Principal and Athletic Director, Kyle Fisher.
Jailers, dispatch receive salary increases
After seven months the Mineral County Sheriff’s office contract negotiations are complete. With jailers and dispatch employees receiving a $1.80 hour increase in their salaries. County commissioners met with union business representative Shawn Fontaine and employees on November 20 to discuss the over-due contract.

Superior geology students were able to see with their own eyes the glacially carved features of Glacier National Park and learned about long, deep lakes like Lake McDonald and Bowman.
Drug dealers sentenced after Mineral County arrests
Defendants from two separate drugs busts which occurred in Mineral County were sentenced by the U.S. District Courts earlier this month. Hector Ricardo Gonzales, 30, from Kennewick, Washington was arrested on January 20 along with codefendant, Christian Jesus Ruiz, for 20 pounds of methamphetamine after being pulled over by sheriff’s deputies. On Oct. 12 in Helena, U.S. District Court Judge Sam Haddon sentenced Hector to 260 months in prison with five years supervision after his release.
Recycling comes back to Alberton
Citizens find their own solution
The big blue Republic recycling bin is back in front of the Alberton Feed and Supply store thanks to a small group of community minded citizens who want to see recycling continue in this small town. The bin originally was put into place about four years ago as the result of a senior project by Shawnda Rohrbach. At that time Allied Waste owned the garbage business for Mineral County and the bin was donated to the community.

Superior starts quest for new pool with a mad dash
Despite rainy skies over 60 runners showed up for the “Run for the Pool” 5K race held on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Superior. The race started at the Old School and circled near the Eva Horning Park and up past the Mineral Community Hospital.
Superior school levy passes handily, 462 to 331
Faculty and staff at Superior High School were doing the happy dance on Friday after a $3.2 million levy was passed to put an addition on the present high school to allow junior high students to be moved into the facility. The unofficial vote was a whopping 462 to 331, a 131-vote lead in favor of the project.

St. Regis School closed briefly after bomb threat
ST. REGIS — Teachers and students at St. Regis School were evacuated on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 4:20 p.m. due to a bomb threat. According to Superintendent Joe Steele, the threat was made on a written note and left in the locker room. A student found it in a locker while changing out for football and alerted administration.

Sheep Gap Fire still burning, makes run towards Plains
Sheep Gap fire made a run for the town last week, but thanks to quick thinking from fire fighters and the Sheriffs Department no one was hurt.

Billon-dollar rocket saved thanks to Superior alum
A searing heat pounded down on a fire crew as winds pulled flames 70 feet into the air and caused an archway over the road above them. Power lines burst overhead in the rising flames. In the distance they heard explosions and saw trees blow up as unexploded ordnance, or UXO’s, ignited from the fire. On an air force launchpad located 800 yards away sat an Atlas Five rocket carrying a Google Satellite worth nearly $1 billion.
