Helping generate a new generation of pilots

Pilots and car enthusiasts landed in Plains this past Saturday to share their gleaming vehicles of air and road with over 300 admiring fans of all ages. The event also drew a crowd for a pancake breakfast that was a fundraiser supporting a $500 scholarship given annually to a student wishing to pursue a career in aviation—as a pilot or mechanic. That scholarship, sponsored by the Sanders County Hanger group of the Montana Pilots Association and overseen by Dan Lilja, awarded this year’s scholarship to Cuahtemoc Rivera of Heron, Mont. who wants to pilot long range, hauling airplanes.

Runners excel at the Edge

Peaking at just the right time – that’s the whole purpose of the 10-week cross country season.  It’s where the science of training meets the art of experience.  As a coach, you put together a mix of quality and quantity; work and recovery; motivation and support; and, above all, hope.  Hope that the plan included enough mileage – but, not too much; hope that you pushed them hard enough – but, not so hard that they crossed the fine line into injury or illness; hope that you gave them the direction needed to be successful; and, hope that you did the right thing for each of the 10 wonderfully unique individual athletes that were part of the 2010 Plains High School Cross Country team.

Truth about mining 'Bad Actor' law

When critics of the Mining Bad Actors Law attacks Montana’s enforcement of a state law that protects taxpayers from shouldering the clean-up bill for mining companies, it’s clearly time to impose an old-fashioned smell test. In weaving together their argument, they got many of their facts wrong.

Water compact heads back to court to block vote

ST. IGNATIUS - The simmering dispute over the water compact is headed back to court. The latest development comes as the Flathead Joint Board of Control (FJBC) pushes to send out a referendum ballot to local irrigators, asking whether they approve of their districts’ withdrawal from the regulatory irrigation board. However, the referendum may never reach its intended audience, as the Jocko Valley and Mission irrigation districts have taken legal action to block the vote, contending that it not only wastes time and money, but also seeks to illegally undermine the districts’ decisions to withdraw earlier this year - a move primarily motivated by the camps’ differing opinions on the proposed water compact. The ballot was originally intended to be mailed out to about 2,000 Lake and Sanders County irrigators on Oct. 25, but could now be delayed by a court-issued restraining order.

A holiday brought to you by working people

If national holidays have anything in common it’s that those of us who celebrate them by taking the day off don’t give much thought to the origin or meaning of the holiday. That’s true of secular holidays (never mind Religious holidays) from the Fourth of July to Memorial Day and right on through to this week’s day off, Labor Day.

Insuring the energy future of the family farm

One of the hardest parts of ranching or farming a multi-generational agricultural entity is the constant knawing sensation that a perfect storm of weather problems and low livestock or crop prices may stress the operation to the point that the bank won’t even offer an operating loan. Rural Montanans know that feeling or know someone who does.
